A Delta Zeta passes on

Hi everyone. I'm not a member of Delta Zeta, but I thought those who are maybe would like to know. Perhaps one of the oldest DZ members passed away Tuesday in my Ohio hometown. She was 96. She had been fighting cancer for about 5 years. Mrs. Hughes was a fantastic woman of grace, leadership, hardwork, and scholarship. She was highly respected and admired in the community. I knew her personally through my parents and she was always happy with a cheerful attitude. She was what any group would call a "model member." She was a wonderful female. I mourn her loss not only for her family and our community, but also for DZ because she was everything you would want a member to be.

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

Thank you very much for the post about Mrs. Hughes, MJo19. It's always heartwarming to hear about a sister who embodied the values of our founders throughout her life. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. :( I'm sure that she'll be remembered in the Flame Eternal section of our next Lamp publication. I'll have to remember to look for her name.

Please do tell me if she is in there. Her first name was Eve. She was initiated at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio which from what I understand is no longer functioning... I hope that doesn't make a difference. I wonder what her family is doing with her badge. None of her grand-daughters are DZ's that I know of. Does DZ have specific things to do with the badge of passed on members? I hope it gets in the "right hands" even though I am sure none of her family would disrespect the badge in any way.

Her chapter being inactive won't make a difference at all for a listing in the Flame Eternal.

Official Delta Zeta policy gives sisters the choice to be either buried with their badge or to have the badge returned to DZ headquarters in Oxford, Ohio. Hopefully, Sister Eve put a note in her will telling her family what her wishes were regarding her badge. Otherwise, there is a tendency for the badge to eventually wind up in pawn shops, on E-Bay, or in other non-DZ hands.

Evie Hughes was the grandmother of my daughter's childhood best friend (and maid of honor :). She was a delightful woman who adored her grandchildren.

SOOOO...if she is from "your Ohio hometown" I now know where you are from :)! and that is *my* old stomping grounds ;) :).

I will have my daughter email Christina (Evie's granddaughter) and have her inquire about it. Christina is a FINE young woman.

Oh My Gosh!!! Christina and I used to play together!!!!! My dad and her dad were best friends and went to high school together!! You know where my hometown is already Pam! :p
Christina isn't a DZ is she?

sageofages 02-24-2006 05:53 PM

Ok so did you go to Marie Fultz to be babysat too?

I don't know if Christina is a DZ. I will have my daughter email. :)

MJo19 02-24-2006 05:55 PM

No..but my maternal grandparents who I did go to be baby sat for lived on the same road as Christina's grandparents lived. We used to play together when we were at my father's grandparents also in Springfield. I'll see Christina at the viewing tonight.

Evie Hughes

I sent you a PM

MJo19 02-24-2006 06:03 PM

got it:) All I can think of is the song "It's A Small World After All...."

MJo19 02-24-2006 09:22 PM

I just got back from the viewing, and rest assured the DZ badge of Mrs. Hughes will not end up in a nonmembers' hands. She was wearing it on the lapel of her pink suit. :)

Thank you so much for letting me know. :) I wish I had been able to meet Mrs. Hughes during her lifetime. Sounds like she was a very special lady and sister.
