Curt Gowdy Dead.
Gowdy dies of leukemia at age 86 (I think thats the age I read)
He was a high school and college athlete, playing basketball for the University of Wyoming although very short in stature. He had a great 2 handed set shot, I was told. Dick Ebersol, president of NBC Sports said, "If Curt Gowdy broadcast it, it was big." He did multiple World Series, Superbowls and Rose Bowls. His son, Curt Gowdy, Jr. is a high ranking network producer. |
This is big news here in Boston, because he called Red Sox games for a number of years. From what I've heard, he was one of the nicest people in the profession.
A true loss, both as a sportscaster and as a person. |

He had left the Peacock Network before I started directing football for them, so I never had the opportunity to meet him. |
It's funny, since he's before my time, I only remember him for doing commentary during the Drum Corps International finals during the laste 80s/early 90s.
I remember all the band dorks cringing just cause he called them "bands" and not "corps". Either way, he sounded like a really classy guy. May he rest in peace. |
