legacy?
 

My roommate and I have been wondering this for a while. She was fully initiated into ZTA last year but right before her Sophomore year, she ran into financial problems and had to drop. If many years from now, she had had a daughter and her daughter decided to rush, would her daughter still be considered a legacy? Or, do you have to be in a sorority until you graduate in order for your daughter to be considered a legacy?

If your friend really IS a member, wouldn't she have learned that information during her process? So, wouldn't she have or know that information? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

AKA2D-- thats something we didn't learn either while pledging. While we were fully learned in our history, we didn't review the bylaws of our arganization as far as what do to do uncommon situations.
ZTAngel....your local advisor should know what to do as well.

They don't exactly go over what will happen to your status if you decide to drop. While you're pledging, the idea is to teach us about being a member and NOT about what will happen if we decide not to stay a member. Also, I know that she really IS a member because we got initiated together.

A couple of thoughts/answers:

I'll bet that the rules differ somewhat from organization to organization, but I suspect that since she was initiated, her daughter would be considered a legacy.

Second, I ran across a question a while ago from a woman who wondered if her son would be considered a Delt legacy if her father (the son's grandfather) is a Delt, but not her husband (the son's father). The answer is yes -- at least in the view of Delta Tau Delta.

Your roommate is a fully initiated member and if she is no longer involved on the collegiate level, she should contact IO about getting her alumnae status activated.

Any daughters your friend would have would be considered legacies.

Definitely follow PnguinTrax's advice.

I know for my own sorority it would depend on what her chapter and National's consider her status to be.

For instance, my chapter's policy is that if a member leaves the sorority before completing one fully initiated year as an active member, she'd be EXPELLED from the sorority. So then no, the daughter wouldn't be a legacy. But not every chapter has this policy.

If the woman completes a year, and then leaves on good standing; the daughter may be considered a legacy.

It's all so confusing, especially since we have four different ways to be considered an alumna!

Okay, this is the question you asked. In your process or even AFTER you all were initiated, did you all LEARN this? Do you have any by-laws which your organization is governed by? If so, can't you find your info there and not on the internet?

First you accuse someone of being a perp - then you intimate that she didn't fully learn the laws of her organization.

As ZTAngel said, the main focus on pledging is learning how to be a good active member. They can't fit every single weird circumstance that might come up in a lifetime of sorority membership into 6 weeks.

As far as bylaws, I know the ones for my organization are in a 30 page booklet. There's no way you could know the whole thing by heart. I'm not sure if each member receives her own copy of the bylaws, but even if they do, there's often a time lag problem. I remember it took us a whole year to get our membership certificates.

It was just a simple question.

AKA2D- The purpose of the GreekChat Forums is to ask those questions which we don't know the answer to. I was actually curious what the answer to that question was because I'm involved in a similar situation. Your response was totally uncalled for.

Folks, I have to agree w/ Ms AKA2D on this one.

A general GREEK message board is not the place to ask about these aspects of YOUR OWN GLO. Does your org have its own forum? Better yet how about contacting your chapter or national hq or even consulting your own initiation materials? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

Earlier this year, someone questioned some type of membership category IN THEIR OWN GLO. This is basic information that every intitiate should know. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

If you don't know basic information about your GLO when initiated, take the initiative and find out. Somebody initiated you so if you don't know the answer, someone in your chapter should! For those *obscure* situations, an advisor, regional or national official should be consulted.

ZTAngel, if she was fully initiated into ZTA (which according to your post, she was), then her daughters and grand-daughters will be legacies. After all, if she was fully initiated, then she is a ZTA for life, right?

However, I have reason to believe that in order for her to provide a written recommendation for a legacy (or any potential member who is not a legacy), I believe that an alumna member must be deemed to be an alumna member in good standing with the sorority. This would mean that financially speaking, her alum dues are all paid up, etc. (I would say most NPC sororities would be like this...but I could be wrong).

For something like this, definitely go with Pngtrax...not only is she a ZTA also, but she definitely knows her NPC 'lore'.

To SoCalGirl, what the 4 different ways that women in your NPC sorority can be considered alumna status? Are they:
1. If you've graduated from college
2. If you leave school during your undergrad degree
3. If you marry during your undergrad degree
4. ______
