Cystic Fibrosis Ideas

DPhiE has been supporting Cystic Fibrosis since 1958.

CF is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the U.S. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections and issues. These same thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas and prevent digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines. More than 10 million Americans are unknowing and symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. For more information, please visit cff.org.

This past weekend, I was priviledged to attend the "65 Roses Gala and Silent Auction" benefitting Cystic Fibrosis sponsored by the Gamma Alpha DPhiE Chapter at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. It was a great event and was attended by well over 100 students, parents, physicians, faculty and DPhiEs.

FYI..."65 Roses" is the way that many children with the disease actually say the name of it, and the name and flower have been associated with CF since 1965.

Soooooooooo.........

What does your chapter do to raise money for CF, and how long have you been doing it?

Well - since no one posts on here from the chapter, one of their fundraisers for CF are the paper pumpkins around halloween.

They sell them for $1 and work with the school food supplier to get them placed on the wall/window, depending on where they sell them.

It's not a HUGE money maker, but it's an inexpensive way for students to contribute and to get CF and the chapter's name out on campus.

ETA: I have another group that cans outside of the local walmart (with permission), they also do this for our educational foundation, etc.

I believe that another chapter uses a door decorating contest with the other fraternities and sororities on campus during the holidays.

Another one asks local merchants for prizes and raffles them off.

...and don't forget, fire1977, that Eta does the Deepher Dude! Love that article/PR on the event!

I'm not gonna lie - I haven't been a fan of Deepher Dude in the past because it's been a lot of effort for only a small amount of money, but I think this semester they made me a believer!
I am hoping that they move it to the fall though, as the VPP team now plans two events a semester: Deepher Dude and the ANAD vigil.

the alpha gamma chapter also raises funds for CFF by hosting an annual pageant... it's the same concept as deepher dude, we just call it campus man..... this year they raised well over $1500, making it the most successful campus man ever!

To change it up a bit, the Psi chapter throws an 8 Ball tournament which we promote throughout the Greek community. It's 25 dollars for a team of two plus they get shirts. Prizes vary, with first prize being a $100 dollar bar tab at a local bar. Last November was our third year doing it, and its slowly becoming a success.

In regards to Deepher Dude, I think we don't do it because the KD chapter here has a very successful "Big Man on Campus" event which I'm pretty sure is similar to Deepher Dude.
