Greeks face stricter party policy

Since 2002, most fraternity and sorority house parties at the University of Florida - sometimes nearly as big as 300 people - have been held without any security. But that will change under a new policy instituted at UF this semester.

Any registered party held at Greek houses at UF where alcohol is present will now require two law enforcement officers for security, said Chris Bullins, director of fraternity and sorority affairs.

"I think it is a proactive step in being a deterrent," Bullins said. "I think the presence of an officer is going to make people think twice about drinking underage."

So, what are the requirements for registering a party at UF?

It seems to me, that it would just cause people to stop registering.

Also, who pays for the law enforcement officers?

"Fraternities will have to use local law enforcement, such as the Gainesville Police Department, instead of private security companies. And instead of having officers just stationed at the door, one officer will be roving through the house throughout the event."

"Registered parties actually constitute a small fraction of the social events for Greeks. Each organization only throws about one or two registered house parties each year. Other parties are hosted by third-party vendors who provide their own security."

I can't believe throw parties without this. Every house at our school hired cops. It's cheap, they're effective if any fights break out, and it's just effective risk management.

Ahh yes, the "guest list". We hired security for our parties as well. They weren't cops though, more like bouncers.

I don't know if your school had a police station close to campus, but usually you can stop by and ask if they know of anyone that wants the job for a couple hours. Ours had a list of cops that would work after hours.

And there are benefits to them being a cop. In general your party is less likely to get shut down by other cops. If a kid attacks someone, I'd rather him be taken away then to be kicked out and come back for revenge. It's just not worth it you know?

Oh, the cops would always be at our parties. They would pull up in our driveway, park the car and sit for about a good half hour watching people come and go. They never really bothered anyone at the party but it was really funny to watch some of the freshman kids FREAK OUT because "the cops are here!!!!!"
