New Sigma Kappa jewelry question
Hi Ladies! I have a question. I know that you are are against people selling your sorority pins and other sacred paraphanalia over the internet..and you have reason to be! But how do you feel about other items being sold online that may be of interest to your members? I design jewelry and other cute things, and I was thinking of opening an online store. If I had some cute maroon and purple earrings with dangle hearts or a really cute bookmark or anythng else cute that was purple and maroon with a heart, would any of you all be offended? Do you girls just not like the fact that historical items can get in the wrong hands? Please let me know b/c I'd like to get my site running

I think it would be o.k. and I would personally not be offended if I saw jewelry or paraphernalia that had the colors maroon or lavender or pearls or doves b/c while they are our symbols & colors, they can be used by anyone to represent other things besides Sigma Kappa. It is when the letters are used that we get offended since they are a trademark of Sigma Kappa sorority.

I'm not a SK, but hopefully you'll read this before you spam every other sorority board with this same message.
I would say that as long as you leave the letters off, you're all good. I would be likely to buy, say, a red & white bookmark w. a ladybug on it because it reminded me of ASA, but I couldn't be upset if a non-member bought it, because it didn't have letters, and it wasn't exclusivly ASA. When you add letters to the mix, that's when people get upset...although there are plenty of other places non-members can get lettered stuff. |
BDE - You beat me to it! But good answer:)

my question was more along the lines of would you purchase those types of items? I wouldnt want to get in any vendor licencing trouble. I know that letters are the main focus, but some groups have trademarks on colors and symbols together. thats why i was asking

But as far as trademarks on maroon & violet, I'm really not sure & I wouldn't know where to look in our handbooks in regards to vendors. Your best bet is to email info@sigmakappa.org to get their suggestion! Most likely there won't be any problems because Maroon & Violet will probably be considered different than Sigma Kappa Maroon & Sigma Kappa Violet. Good luck! |

I agree. This is especially perfect for alums who don't want to wear their letters but would like something to remind them of Sigma Kappa. |
If are wanting to market specifically to Sigam Kappa's, you really should contact our National Headquarters and inquire about becoming a licensed vendor.
