DOES BGLOS AND GLOS SHOW EACH OTHER LOVE?

First of all this is not a race question at all so please do not turn it into that. I was just wondering........... if on the campuses where there are glos and bglos do they have love for one another? I mean they are all "greek" org. so do they support each other? Do they ever hold any functions which each other? Do they even acknowledge one another or do they just each function as if the other does not exist? Or do they have any bad blood on any campuses? I was wondering because I think that at some point for some cause they all should do something together or at least acknowledge each other. What do all of you think? On my campus there are GLOs i do not know what they all are but I see signs posted all the time, but I never see the two (glos and bglos) intermingle.

sometimes....They do on Club Fair but thats about it. The BGLOs seem to be more supportive of each other than GLOs are. There is not that much support between GLOs. But they are set up to independant so I don't know if thats good or bad.

On my campus, the BGLOs as well as other minority greeks do not intermingle w/ the other GLOs. It's pretty sad. I'm hoping that one day, my sorority can change that. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hey ZetaChi, I think yall have a tight sorority. On my campus Zeta Sigma Chis intermingle more with Bglos than with Glos. One of the greeks told me that the Zeta Sigma Chi was trying to get In NPHC I do not know how true it is but the chapter on my school is Blacks and Hispanics dunno about everywhere else. They are sooooooooooooo sweet though. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Recently one of our chapters of Delta Zeta (GLO) and a chapter of AKA (BGLO) got together and did a philanthropy project. It was titled "Pink and Green, Campus Clean". Both sororities have Pink and Green as their colors, so they banned together and held a campus wide clean-up project. I don't know if this is common on that particular campus, but I thought it was pretty cool.

to sum it up on my campus - no.

we (bglos) will usually support glo functions (parties, council meetings if invited...) but during the 4 years i was there, i never saw a member of an nic/npc org at any of our functions......

Thanks for the complements! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Well as far as our other chapters being mixed, it does depend on the school. At my chapter, we are predom black w/ one Asian member. At one of our other chapters, we have a mixture of White, Latina, Black, etc. I know at our school, it's really hard to draw in women of other cultures (i.e. the Indian/Asian population). We have a sorority for every ethnic/racial background here, so many people tend to flock to their own backgrounds. THat's something we just can't help...we can't make people join, ya know. Then, to top it off, being Greek is not a big deal on our campus. Men and women just don't jump at the chance to be Greek. So w/ all those things, it can be hard to get the racial/ethnic mixture we'd love to have. But we aren't giving up! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
About our MSU chapter (I'm presuming that's who you're referring to, I'm not sure), I have also heard about them wishing to join the NPHC. But I'm not sure if that will happen or not. The reasons behind this have to do w/ our National Board though.

Finally, at my school, we do tend to mingle w/ the BGLOs at this point. We have only been around for a year and most of our good friends are in the BGLOs. So mixing w/ the them was natural to do once we got our chapter. We have been mixing w/ the other minority greeks though which is a start. No other BGLOs or other minority Greeks have mixed w/ the other historically white GLOs, so it's definitely gonna be a big task for us to tackle. Right now, we don't even know how we're going to approach the situation. But we're hoping to one day leap that fence and bring peeps together in some way. We've been doing our best to hold parties (usu. a good way to bring people together) that encompass everyone's taste in music and stuff. But that is so hard to do...you can't please everyone http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif I think what we'll have to do is to work w/ more student orgs that are mainly white, Indian, etc and then branch into the Greek orgs. It's just hard to do and b/c people are so afraid to try new things, who knows when the day will come when we can all truly come together! <shrug> But we're working on it! sorry this was so long

I am a Trustee of a national GLO and served as an IFC VP during my undergraduate days. The biggest obstacle (beyond the cultural obstacles mentioned previously in this thread, such as "everyone wants to join their 'own' group") to getting more interaction between GLOs and BGLOs at Case Western Reserve U. is that many BGLOs are organized on a city-wide basis.

Many universities will not officially recognize a group that consists of students and non-students of that university. So, for the longest time, BGLOs have not been officially recognized on campus for this reason.

So, the BGLOs got together and formed a Black Greek Council that consists of only the members of each chapter that actually attend CWRU. That collective body is now represented in the CWRU IFC as one whole.

Due to this situation, it's more difficult to organize collective events using university funds with BGLOs at CWRU. The university doesn't want the activities money paid for by students to fund activities for non-students. Those fees are separate from the money students pay in tuition and they generally keep a pretty tight leash on how that money gets spent, Greek or non-Greek.

I'm not sure if all BGLOs are organized this way, but one way around this issue would be to break down the city-wide chapter organizational unit into "virtual" campus-specific organizational units so we can get around this sort of thing. BGLO members that are actually students at CWRU would then be able get additional campus resources they are not able to get today.

That's just one suggestion I have to get more involvement between GLOs and BGLOs. I'm not sure if this is an issue on any other campus, but it seems to have been an impediment at CWRU for some time now.

This was pretty much the situation at my school--all five BGLOs represented were city-wide chapters.

While we did not receive the funding that most PWGLOs received on campus, we did have a little more latitude in our activities. My chapter had a box in the SA office and was allowed to host activities on campus so it wasn't all the way hands-off.

I don't recall that there was any move to form the type of council of which you spoke but it does sound like a good idea to implement. Many of our collective activities were done in association with the BSU, of whom most of the officers were Greek anyway so maybe that was why the council-type of org was not needed.

Ineteresting convo!

That's a very good point about less regulation from the university. I know chapters that are officially recognized by the university have a lot more university rules they have to follow than the BGLOs.

Basically, the BGLOs can do whatever they want, since the university doesn't have any responsibility for them. That might be worth not getting any money from them, considering the inordinate amount of regulations that are now in place.

I would also say that not getting any university funding might be worth not having to play "gotcha" games with the university admin sometimes. I have seen several cases in my work as a Trustee where the university has been really looking for ways to "get" fraternities and using fairly poor judicial procedures to boot.
