Do You Believe in God?

NBC POLL

Do You Believe in God?

NBC recently had a poll on this question. They had the highest
number of responses that they have ever had for one of their polls, and the
percentage was the same as this:

86% to keep the words, IN God We Trust and God in the Pledge of Allegiance
14% against.

That is a pretty 'commanding' public response.

_ ...It is said that86% of Americans believe in God.
Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such
a mess about having "In God We Trust" on our money and having
God in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Why is the world catering to this 14%?

Uh, no one is catering to this 14% - I've never heard of anyone whining about money, even atheists know that it was added post hoc and doesn't reflect on anything constitutionally.

The pledge of allegiance is another story, since that line was added in a fit of 'red scare' anti-communist paranoia - most people looking for change would rather see the pledge as it was originally worded.

AAAAAAAAAAAAnd . . . you're misstating the question either way. "Catering" to the 14% could also be restated as "defending the ideals the nation was founded upon."

True That. Most people don't realize that "under God" wasn't added till the '50s, around the same time people were building fall-out shelters in their backyard. Commies are atheist, so it was one way to combat the commies that were crawling all over Hollywood at the time. But now it has turned into some Pat Robertson-Christian-Coalition-Abortion Clinic bombing- Crusade to keep "under God" in.

You do realize that the McCarthey-era was largely a political witchhunt that had little to do with any Hollywood infiltration, RIGHT?

If not, read this.

Exactly - the "Red Scare" wasn't exactly a time of pride in the United States. McCarthy ended up a broken man by the time all was said and done.

Whenever anyone posts anything on this board trying to get survey data, there is an overwhelming response about how trying to collect valid data on the Internet is ridiculous, stupid, inaccurate, etc.

Internet polls are even worse. Those statistics are worthless. Besides, isn't it more important whether or not something is right, not whether or not more people in an Internet poll agree with it? And even more importantly, whether you agree with the statements on money and the Pledge has nothing to do with whether or not you believe in God! There are people who believe in God who disagree with those statements, and there are people who do not believe in God who really don't care.

the two arent equivalent. because 86% of "Americans" responded to keep the words doesnt mean they are God-believing. hell, i probably wouldve voted yes, even as i consider myself agnostic. frankly, i dont think enough of the pledge of allegiance to go changing the words all of a sudden. sometimes i just skip reciting that part. just like Jehovah Witnesses dont pledge allegiance to the flag, because that would mean putting the flag over Jehovah (someone correct me if this is wrong, this is what my JW grandmother told me).

and to be a pain in the @$$, im sure not everyone who took this poll is "American" and its not a public poll because not everyone has access to the internet. hell, its on nbc.com.

off my soapbox.
