Adjusting Total for NPC Sororities
Student papers on two very different campuses have recently run stories about NPC sororities increasing total. We've also seen news about total being lowered on some campuses (U. of Utah, for instance). It's my understanding that the NPC nationally is encouraging (requiring?) college Panhellenics to review total annually, or at least much more often than used to be the case.
I thought GC might welcome news and discussion of changes to total at U.S. and Canadian schools. First, at Kansas State U., total has been raised from 115 to 140. Five of the 11 NPC chapters (Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Xi Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, and Sigma Kappa) will be able to accept more members; apparently the other six are at or over the new total. See: http://kstatecollegian.com/article.php?a=8686 Kansas State is a midwestern Big 12 public school with a well-regarded Greek system. Second, total is reportedly being recalculated at the U. of Pennsylvania (Penn). An article reports on one sorority (Alpha Phi) that expects to be able to add new members when the new total figure is established. According to the article (see below), seven of the eight NPC sororities at Penn are at or above the current total: http://www.dailypennsylvanian.com/vn.../43e1c00b154b0 Penn is a private Ivy League school. |
In a link from the Alpha Xi Delta Kansas State website it says,
"the average sorority size is approximately 149 members." (read their information about looking for a house mom.) |
That Penn article is strange. The girl is wearing an Alpha Phi shirt and attending meetings even though she is not allowed to be given a bid card? I wonder if the author is using terminology correctly.
|
It also said that the girl is looking forward to meeting the other members of Alpha Phi.
Strangely written article. |
umm, this almost sounds like they're pledging them underground until they're allowed to do it officially. This is actually more common than you'd think - people with grades under par and such.
I would hope they wouldn't be so stupid as to admit to that in the paper. |
