HELP... I HATE MY JOB...
I don't hate my job, really. I hate being paid less than my co-workers but without me that couldn't do their job. I don't think that I should be paid more then them... I just think that I should have equal pay because they can't seem to do anything without me.

Do I get a thanks... most of the time not... am I taken for granted... yes... most of the time.

Amen sister!!!! I know that I get paid less than a recently hired coworker. She doesn't even have enough work to do to keep her busy for 40 hrs a week. The office manager has had numerous meetings about her with her superviser. I am gaining more and more projects everyday......I'm in the process of pleading my case for a raise though...just need to get the facts together..

Definitely collect your facts and present your case, especially if you've taken on new responsibilities/projects. I would suggest though that you NOT compare your salary to the co-worker's salary when asking for the raise. Make the case based on your work.

My job has been extremely busy and I am hoping to find out in February that I'm getting a promotion. I have taken on huge amounts of responsibility in the past year because my co-worker became our manager so he hasn't time to do anything. I'm trying to train a new guy who isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and it's frustrating. If I don't give him step by step instructions for everything, he can't figure anything out on his own. I don't think he could troubleshoot a computer problem to save his life. When I do give him tasks, with step by step directions, if the slightest thing goes wrong, he's running to me for help. It's almost easier to just do everything myself, but then he will never learn. It's been a rough couple months.

This is a really minor question..... anyone have ideas on where I can find an org chart without directly asking for a copy?

I just switched jobs in October so I haven't been around long enough yet to rant, I still like it there.

Here is the baisc structure of the department--- there is the head finanical man, the accounting manager- and the rest of us report to the accounting manager. (or so i think!)

I am the accountant for our field offices-- there is a guy in the dept who does AR but just for the field offices. Whenever he is going to take a vaca day he emails the reminder to the accounting manager and me. One day before the holidays he asked if we got to leave early as the next day was a holiday (i don't know- i am new!) Yesterday he asked me if he could leave early. I told him I didn't care (why would i care! and the acct manager was gone- though i was the only one in the dept who was notified).

Anywho-- the accounting manager got a small promotion, he is being groomed for the head job when that guy retires-- so the manager moved offices upstairs, leaving his office in the accounting dept empty. They moved the AR guy into the office, causing a stir amongst the others in cubes. I was at lunch with the girls in the dept one day- they were complaining about the office move. My reply was "oh admit it, you all complained when i started-- new girl gets the big office and you didn't" they all looked appalled at me- i laughed said its ok, i would have complained too! Their response was "oh my gosh no--- we are all well aware that you are above the rest of us lowly people in the department-- it was only right that you got the office"

So do I have more "power" than I thought--- does the AR guy report to me somehow and I don't know it? How do I find out without asking?
In my mind, we all report to the same boss-- so we should all be in the same-- but then the other side of the argument is obviously there is some difference in authority level--- I have corporate check signing priviledges, bank wiring authority, etc. where no one but me, the acct manager, the head guy and the pres of the company....

But how do I find out if I have more authority than I thought I did. I think the AR guy thinks I am his boss.

And I agree.

Ask for a raise-- gather your info, facts, etc, present them to the boss. I agree with Dee too, don't comare your salalry with the coworkers.
Try checking out salary.com to get comparisions to others in your field, in your area.

Is there an organizational chart in the employee manual? That's where I've found it for my last few jobs.

It isn't the fact that they make more... it is the fact that they don't do enough to make what they make. I would never compare my pay with their pay...

Here is the problem... I constantly have something to do, something to update, something to file, someone to help with this issue or that... while my coworkers find the time to sit and chat, go get coffee, read the newspaper, or whatever...

Meanwhile, my boss just keeps coming back to add more and then asks why I don't have this done or that done... it is a pain. I know that I should go for a raise... but everytime I start to make my list of what I do... it doesn't seem all that great.

I'm just ranting about the situation. I am mad that the person I am going up against for a new position, is working in that position already part time. So that means that it was pointless for me to apply for that position.

I am just praying for something to come along that is bigger and better.

The org chart could be anywhere and may not actually be "public". Do you have any kind of "intranet" system? Maybe with some of your HR stuff?

If you're curious about certain people you may want to ask them or your boss (in a nice or secret way of course). If it casually comes into conversation I don't think most people would think twice about it. Say something to your boss like "Wow, you must be so busy these days with all these people working for you now. How many people report to you now exactly, 8 or 9"??

On a side note...as others have said be careful when asking for a raise. It's definitely worth taking a chance, but if you're not prepared it could backfire. You'll at least know where you stand with your boss and if you need to start looking for a new job to get a raise. I was a recruiter for a few years and I have to say that it can be quite difficult to get a bump in pay unless you leave your current job/employer or you show them another offer from somewhere else. Everyone always wants to know how much another place thinks you're worth! So crazy, but unfortunately it happens a lot.

If you would consider leaving, then you may want to interview a little get another offer and talk to your employer. They will probably be more likely to bump your pay when they know you may leave and someone is willing to pay you more! But if you're not willing to leave, you may not want to try this approach because they may just tell you to take the other job!

I understand workplace frustration!! I just moved from Duluth to Buckhead, Atlanta for a "higher paying" job, leaving a job I have been at for four years. I found out the day before I was leaving for Convention that my NEW employer is now restructuring and is letting three people from the office go...myself included. I've never been laid off before so this is a new kind of workplace stress for me!

I wanted to change fields anyway. Anyone know of a law firm or legal office that would hire someone with limited experience and endless potential?? Prefer. in Atlanta area?:cool: :o

i hate that i've shown up for my GA work the past few days and the prof has all but forgotten about me - grrrrrrrrrrrr - i won't complain too much seeing as the job is over on friday! thank goodness
