Surgery for severe head trauma -- Fight at VA Tech, Fraternity Member Arrested

Regional media (WSLS Channel 10) reports on the arrest of a Virginia Tech fraternity member because of injuries to another guy in a fight. The report indicates that there was a dispute because someone was not on a guest list. We've certainly seen these kinds of stories before:

Are there some things that have worked for chapters to help keep entry to parties under control and avoid fights, etc.?

Well as to the story, the idea of an "unprovoked attack" seems unlikely. If the guy was just jumped then I guess thats the case, but in my experience that doesn't happen. It never ceases to amaze me that a couple of guys will walk into a fraternity party and start problems, or when asked to leave will create a situation. This happens occassionally at our house, usually ending with some girls finally convincing them to leave...and in doing so saving them from a fight they would surely lose.

As for what works to prevent fights, our school requires security guards to be hired for band parties, and usually they just toss the guys into the street before anything happens. They also help us restrain brothers, which is useful. However, at a fraternity we get along with next door, this guy had hit a girl, and the fraternity had roughed him up pretty good. The cops showed up and said "well, we can either try and press charges, but nothing will probably happen, or we can just leave you to handle it." I thought that was pretty funny.

"Sigma Phi Epsilon. Their fraternity motto: Building balanced leaders.
But this weekend one of their brothers at Virginia Tech was arrested for malicious wounding."

According to the Roanoke VA Times the victim is a 19-year-old student at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The alleged assailant is a Sig Ep at Virginia Tech, although the Roanoke paper says his membership has been suspended pending the results of the police investigation.

There are several curent news stories out there about this incident. Google News can bring them up -- search on word combinations like:

fraternity virginia tech;

fraternity wounding president;

fraternity sigma phi epsilon;

fraternity party injury
