Siblings pledging different organizations??
 

Hi everyone,
I was wondering...have you ever experienced siblings pledging different organizations? By that I do mean same sex obviously. If you have what are your general thoughts about such a situation? Is it common? Are siblings expected to follow in the footsteps of their sibling? Is anyone against it...if so why? I'm just curious...

Are siblings expected to attend the same college? Choose the same major? Work in the same field? Marry a pair of siblings? Dress alike? Talk the same? Eat the same foods? Watch the same movies?

I rest my case.

FWIW, identical twins pledged two different fraternities, and two different sororities while I was in school. A third set of female twins split by one pledging, the other becoming a cheerleader. We had two sets of fraternal twins in my sorority.

10, 9, 8, 7, 6.....3, 2, ONE!

LOL. For real though, I'm really asking.

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.

I think for most parents, you want your offspring to follow in your footsteps, especially in the things you hold close to you -- sorority/fraternity membership whereas your siblings not so much because they're not your offspring and typically siblings do things differently anyway.

As parents, we mold our children and show them the light -- how to live right, manners, attire, education, sorority/fraternity affiliation -- and hope that our training while they are young will follow them in their adult years. It crushes a parent (MY SPECULATION) when their child "rejects" the parent's organization/ways and CHOOSES another organization/ways.

If my unborn, unconceived daughter chose another sorority and not DST, I would be hurt but ultimately I did show my daughter the importance of sisterhood, scholarship, and service which is the underlying principles of all sororities. If she does not find DST a best fit, but finds it with another org, I would celebrate her choice for her.




I'm wise and brave with the unconceived daughter.

Time to go mentor. :D

ETA: And with the way our world is changing around us, there are bigger fish to fry than if my daughter wears DST on her chest.

^^Okay, this makes sense. I guess I'm a different breed, lol, because one of the things I love about my daughter is that she is so different from me. I like some orgs better than others, but I would support her no matter what she joined, because her individuality is more important to me than her following in my footsteps. She's just a free spirit already and I don't want to crush that. :) .

I would feel the same about a sibling, to get back to the thread topic. To me, having a choice is what makes all our orgs great. Again, I prefer some over others, but that's my preference. I wouldn't want someone to follow in my footsteps just because. I would want them to do what's in their heart.

I agree with with most of what you said except the "celebrating her choice" part. :D But once again, my opinion is quite clearly stated in this thread :p And of course there are "bigger fish to fry", "with the way our world is changing" I would be happy that my child is in college and acccomplished enough to be selected by a sorority, however that would not lessen the negative feelings I would have if she chose another sorority over Alpha Kappa Alpha. I consider membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha so much more than letters on a chest. ;)

I ain't gonna lie. I DO NOT want my daughter on a sweetheart line. Oh, dayum! You said same sex, huh?

Well, in that case, I don't plan to have another child. However, if I had a male child, I would be more concerned about him following daddy's footsteps in school (taking forever to graduate from college) than pledging a fraternity (becoming a kappa). Honestly, as long as the frat (chapter) does a better job of focusing on graduating and not partying, drinking, beating pledges (allegedly), and sleeping with LOTS of gorgeous women (like my chapter did) then he has my full support.
