Any Community Service suggestions?

Hello fellow brethern,

I am wondering if anyone has any great ideas for a philantrophy event? After I became initiated last fall I was picked to be the new Community Service Chair for the Lambda Mu chapter at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. We are about 55 members strong. I would like to make a huge impact on the campus, in the community(since I'm from this area), and on Nationals. I want to show my brothers that I was the right man for the job. I've been looking for ideas for the past week or so and I'm just not sure what to do or how to organize it. Lambda Mu just got their charter in April 2005 so we, as an official chapter, haven't had much to work off of. One of the problems is that I don't have a committee...unfortunetly noone volunteered so I'm flyin' solo on this one. If anyone has ANY suggestions on what I can do and how I can organize it, please let me know.

Involve food and booze, people love both.

-Walking dogs for the Humane Society.
-Challenging the boys at the local juvenile detention center to a basketball game. We did this every year with the Pikas at my school, so it became a mixer, too. Take cokes & munchies. This is a GREAT chance to show kids on the wrong path how much fun it can be to be in college!
-Offer to read to the elderly.
-Adopt a highway. This comes with the PR of having a good sized sign saying, "The next mile is being kept beautiful by the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha."

Thats pretty insane. I would imagine those kids know how to ball, and aren't afraid to gank some college kid over a double dribble.

The dog walking idea sounds really cool.

Trust me, they do NOT let the really hard cases come to this type of an event! It's the kids who they think might benefit from the experience.

And maybe I shouldn't have used the word "challenge"!

What We Did

Well, its a huge undertaking, but we just sponsored our first golf tournament. I'm sure there are a few courses that would help you out near you. Also this spring we are going to do a 24 hour dunk tank. It'll be fun to have kids coming out and relieve some frustraion and watching our members get soaked. Habitat for humanity is another great choice, since they have charity down to a science. Even to volunteer in a soup kitchen..... Those are not neccessarily philanthropic events, but definitely a good start to charity work and community service

Whatever community service you do, make sure you get publicity for it. I cannot stress that enough ( I knowmay get some slack for saying this). Some people may argue that the purpose of doing community service is FOR the community. While I agree with that, we must realize that we must take advantage of publicity when we can.

Declare a campus clean up day and promote it around campus. Tell the campus that Pi Kappa Alpha is sponsoring it. Have lots of barbeque food set up on campus (hot dogs, hamurgers). Give away free food to anyone who picks up a piece of trash and throws it away in a trash can at the Pi Kappa ALpha tent.

This may cost some cash (food), but only positive things can happen from this. If done right, Pike will be put on the campus newspaper, potential rushees will come over for the free food and depending on how smart your chapter is, you can tell them about Pike.

Philanthropy

There is another thread about this, just a few threads down. I listed a bunch towards the bottom.
