Spring recruitment '06?

Last semester I was still adjusting to my new school (I am a transfer, and my previous school did not have the Greek system) and I was not ready to rush. I've decided that I'd like to give it a try this semester, but I saw that only 6 of my school's 9 general sororities are participating in spring recruitment. Should I rush in the spring, or should I wait for next fall when all should be recruiting? I'm really excited to get involved, but I'm also afraid that I might miss out on meeting the house I'd love the most. Any advice is welcome!!

Thanks in advance :)

That is entirely up to you. It all depends how you feel about the 6 sororities. Look online at their national webpages and see what they are about. Then visit the rush parties. You are not obligated to join if you go to the parties. Just see what the girls are like. There is nothing wrong with going through spring recruitment. I personally do not think you will be missing out too much if you choosing spring recruitment over fall. Sure there is that possibility that one of the other 3 is your dream sorority. There are 6 out of 9 participating and I think that is a lot. It would be a little different if there were only say 3 sororities participating, but even still no one knows how you personally feel about each group.

No one can decide this for you. Again, it is entirely up to you.

I would participate in Spring Recruitment - it gives you an opportunity to meet the women and see what Greek Life is like at your school. If you find a home at one of the chapters, that's great. If you don't, you can still try Fall Recruitment.

6 of 9 participating are great odds - if it were me, I'd go for it.

I would encourage you to rush but keep your options open. I rushed spring at my school when 2/3 of the sororities were going through as well, and it was a great experience to feel out all the houses and what exactly rush was going to be like. Fall rush can be considerably more competitive (that is, if formal rush is in the fall at your school) and can be a lot more stressful. Remember, you don't have to pledge a house in the spring if you don't want to, but if you see something you like then go for it:)

That is awesome!! I am so glad to hear that you decided to go through spring recruitment even though not all sororities were doing recruitment. I did the same exact thing. I was so worried that i was going to miss out on something, but i ended up at a place i love!!

Congrats again!!;)

I would say that the only bad thing about spring recruitment is that the experience is not the same as fall pledging. The spring pledge classes are considerably smaller, and it's usually harder for the chaper to get to know them. Fall rush is extremely stressful inside and outside the house. Girls get competitive, we get "rush crushes", so its like a week long war between all the sororities. Fall bid day is a like a huge feeling of triumph and relief at the same time, and the new babies are almost like prizes. It's just not the same in the spring.

But that doesn't make it any less special for the women who recieve their bid in the spring

Why? I would think it would be the other way around - that it's much harder to get to know larger classes.

I agree. The only reason I could figure it being more challenging to meet a spring new member class is that the fall is a more active time when people are more apt to come around to things-- I always noticed a drop off after Winter Break--- people were a little burned out after finals and a big new member class, homecoming, a bunch of fall intramurals, etc.
