Black.White. A new Television Show starting March 8 on FX where families trade races
 

For those who haven't heard - in March, FX is debuting a new series Black.White. Co - Executive Produced by Ice-Cube, Black. White. examines the lives of two familes (one white the other black) who switch races and live as the other race. GO here to see the clip:

I heard about the show last year and thought it was interesting. I saw Cube on Good Morning AMerica this morning talking about the show and was even more intrigued. Personally, I think the show will open the dialogue of race relations in this country that people for so long try to ignore . . . .this is NOT a utopian society and there are stereotypes people harbor about the other race that they don't even realize they harbor. For example, one of the clips shown on GMA was the white mother (Carmen) explaining to the black mother (Rene) why the Carmen used the b word when talking to someone . . her comment was that she was "trying to be black." Rene quickly told her that was not being black and of course, Carmen starts to cry . . .interesting. . .


Sorry so long, but I wanted to get GCer's perspective on what effect they think this show will have on race relations in this country, if any.

This could be intersting. I hope the show does well.

Soror LitAKAtor, I don't know what effects this show will have on race relations or even getting us to let our guards down to dig deep and acknowledge the reality of "issues"...........but I wouldn't mind being made-up to look like a Caucasian woman for a minute. I would love to spend the day shopping as a "consumer" instead of a "code-blah-blah-blah-on-isle-32".

Speaking of Black/White...has anyone ever read White Privilege by Paula S. Rothenberg?

never read the above, but have read "black like me" which is commonly read in HS/college, right? thats the first thing i thought of when i read this thread.

i wouldve liked to see other races thrown in. maybe if theres a season 2, theyll throw in some latinos, some east asians? maybe if we're lucky, some middle eastern people?

LOL!! I know right? or better yet without having to be the voice for all african american people when you are the only one in the office . . . I mean, can I NOT be a teacher for one day. . . PICK UP A BOOK!!

Soror, I've been tired of running Black People 101 classes. Where I live during the week, it's 1.8% AfAm.

I can't wait to see this show. It should be... interesting, to say the least.

watching it now... not particularly impressed. i like the daughter and her honesty, but the white father, he's really on some "racism doesnt exist, this is crazy!" ish.

and just from watching 10 minutes of the show, this show is making sweeping generalizations that im like "are. you. SERIOUS!!!!"

i'll say more when i finish watching the show.

i had such high hopes!

p.s. i've taken etiquette classes before. it's not just a white thing, and its not just a rich thing. i know my salad and dinner fork, etc.

I fell asleep on it. :( . But before I did - Bruno and the "N" word had me :mad: . He needs to go to a rural part of SC where they fly Confederate Flags if he reaaalllly wants to get called that word or have a true racist experience - not a car dealership. :rolleyes:

The black mom... hmmm. She's a little irritating. Most would say she was "keeping it real" but I really did not like how defensive/ aggressive she was. The scene at the table where they were teaching the white people how to act black :rolleyes: , then basically would not accept how to accept how to be taught was irritating. I was thinking - she is really not representative of how all black women think. I guess what particularily bothered me was how easy it was for them to criticize everything the white people did (ex: the way that the men hugged).

Equally as annoying was the white family -> joke or not - "let's lock the doors - we don't want the black people to steal anything...":mad: :rolleyes:

The problem is that Bruno thinks being called the word is the ONLY true racist experience. It is the only thing he is looking for (while preaching to Brian about not looking for other stuff) - he seems to think that unless you are calling someone names, that it isn't racist.

I agree about Renee - she had me laughing, but when she said that her "hobbies" were playing tennis & swimming, that's just as stereotypical -- I don't know a lot of people that do either on a regular basis, whether they are black, white, green, or purple.

And I too was really :smh: with the lock the doors comment - I wonder if they really know what jackasses they are -- I swear they found the dumbest white people on the planet! The mom with her high fives & "jive" talking... :rolleyes: :smh:

Wow is all I can say. I see I was not the only one ducking to avoid being hit by the "N" word flying around.

I'm feelin' yah on this one...

IMO, Bruno is such a happy go lucky guy that it doesn't matter what skin he's in, even if he was Black, he'd be one of those under the illusion of inclusion and wind up dissillusioned...

Why'd they go to Rodeo Drive?

I'm thinking Bruno needs to go to the Compton or Inglewood Walmart and see what kind of service he thinks he gets...

Besides, LA just isn't that much as it goes for ultimate racism... Hayle, he can come up here where I am and get ignored, politely, though...
