Beta Theta Pi Closes Southern Methodist Chapter

Beta Theta Pi closed its SMU chapter on December 10, 2005 for risk management violations and poor academic performance, according to the SMU Daily Campus.

According to the paper's story one recent incident in particular caused concern. In October 2005 police responded to a fire alarm at the fraternity house. Apparently a smoke detector had activated the alarm. The smoke, unfortunately for the chapter, was due to people smoking marijuana.

The chapter does have the right to appeal the closure through established Beta Theta Pi procedures.

that really sucks. i am a fan of Beta (nationally at least, realizing that not all chapters live up to their expectations) and hate to see this happen. however, i have heard bad things about the chapter there in the past. I hope they were trying to change things and that they will re-open in a few years.
