Campus hazing, bullying targeted

CHEYENNE - At the request of some University of Wyoming fraternity members, a state legislator has agreed to draft a bill that would outlaw hazing or bullying on campus.

Rep. Jane Warren, D-Laramie, conceded that winning passage of the bill during the upcoming legislative session may be difficult. Because the session is for budget work, her introduction of a bill unrelated to the state budget would require support from two-thirds of the House.

Wyoming is one of just six states without an anti-hazing law. Warren said no specific hazing incidents prompted the bill, but it is possible hazing occurred in Wyoming and the victims are unwilling to talk about it.

The bill would outlaw the hazing of any member, potential member or person pledged to be a member of any school, college or university organization. Whether violators would be charged with misdemeanors or felonies would depend on the seriousness of the offense.

The legislative session begins Feb. 13.
