Phi Delta Theta Closes U. of Utah Chapter for Hazing
 

The January 9, 2006 issue of the student paper at the University of Utah, the Daily Utah Chronicle, reports that Phi Delta Theta has closed its U. of Utah chapter for hazing / risk management violations. The article is at

The Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity removed the Utah Alpha chapter's 91 year-old charter at the U just before Winter Break for violating the group's risk-management policy.

After an allegation was reported about the hazing of a pledge, area alumni conducted an investigation. The alumni concluded that the charges were correct.

The hazing took place during initiation week, often called "hell week," . . . . After the incident the pledge left the chapter's house. He has declined to comment.

"The Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity has a zero tolerance policy regarding hazing, and that means closing chapters," said Ken Maikowski, Tau South Province President. "The chapters are well aware of this policy."

. . . The group is appealing the ruling to the fraternities [sic] general headquarters.

. . . A facebook.com group titled "Remember the Phi Delts!" has been started in honor of the closed charter fraternity. A few students have used the message board to verbally attack the pledge in question. . . .

Still trying to cypher this article out. Doesnt really say a lot other than a Pledge left and there were alligations.

Sounds kind of funny considering what all this Chapter has done.

Even the school is leaving the options very wide open.

Good move by the Phi Delt alumni and headqtrs.

I hope other PDT chapters are told about this, and it's in their magazine.

Their quick action has saved the chapter house, and they can weed out the hazers, reorganize with new members, and hopefully live happilly ever after.

I hope pledges of other chapters read about this, realize that hazing doesn't build brotherhood, and report (or threaten to report) hazing.

There is Not one GLO who has not had problems with Hazing even though our GLOs HQs dont profess Antin Hazing. It is time that The Sh*T Stops. This also goes for Super Drinking. We are so called Social Organizations, Not Binge Drinking GLOs.

If as an Alum and You find this, then put a stop to it ASAP! I Did when I found it and was really pissed!

The Jan. 10, 2006 Salt Lake City Tribune has an article with more details. Reportedly the pledge's father contacted the U. of Utah. The story says the pledge was kicked in the jaw in a session where pledges had to clean up a mess while wearing "long johns." Reportedly the pledge had learned some fraternity "secrets" from sorority women who were friends of the Phi Delt actives.

Upon reading this latest up date I find it stupid on the part of the Chapter or a few members.!:(

They now all pay for it after all they have done.:(

Since they were there that long and all of the great work they did, where was an Alum? If I and many on GC as Alums were there, they would have been incensed, I know I would and really have a problem with something like this.:mad:
