Official 2006 NCAA Football Thread
Even though the roses Vince has right now are still fresh, the 2005 football season is over. And what a season it was. Will 2006 live up to the standard that was set??

Interesting. I'm surprized Ohio State isn't higher in the SI rankings having beaten Notre Dame, nearly beaten Texas and having some pretty fair offensive firepower including Troy Smith returning.
Of course a poll this far out is pure speculation. In fact, it seems silly to me. |

I think next year's Nat'l Champ game will be Texas (if VY comes back) and Ohio State.
If VY does not come back, ND and Ohio State. |
Amycat, here's the problem with that:
Ohio State plays an early-season non conference game at Texas. They then proceed to play a Big 11 (read: weak) schedule. Them losing to Texas and still ending up in the BCS championship game would never happen. And if Ohio State wins at Texas, it will most likely be because there's no Vince Young. That spells trouble for Texas in conference play, count on one or two more losses. At any rate, the chances of Ohio State and Texas still finishing #1 and #2 in the BCS after playing eachother are slim to none. -- and ND is just not as good as advertised IMHO. |
hmm good point ktsnake.
However, w/o VY, I think Ohio State wins it. OK I will ammend my prediction slightly--some combo of Ohio State, Texas and Notre Dame. I think ND will be better next year. 2nd year under Weiss and they return a lot of their key starters. Penn state could be up there, but not sure who is and is not graduating/entering draft early there. USC has a rebuilding year ahead and I predict we go either 10-2 or 9-3. :) QB is not as much an issue (Booty and Sanchez are ready) but tailbacks ARE. Thank God 2/3 our OL returns. |
While i'm not doubting ND has a good team, I don't think they will be NC calibar. They just can't win bowl games, partly because of because they are ND, they are put in much higher games with better oponents than they deserve. Streak is 8 bowl losses in a row, longest in the NCAA.
I'm gonna go for the underdog - I had never heard of West Virginia before this year, and they put together a convincing win at the Sugarbowl. I'd like to see 'em do well again. And I also predict Nebraska will make it into the top 10-15 by the end of the season - with games at USC and vs TX, Nebraska has a decent chance of winning atleast one. Combine that with a favorite to win the Big XII North could mean facing TX/OU in the CG and making it to a BCS bowl with a win. |

Michael Coleman is a good runningback as well. Hershal Dennis was the starting RB before he decided to sexually assault some girl. Desmond Reed is shifty as well. All of those kids were 4 and 5 star recruits coming out of HS as well. I've never seen Booty play QB, but I had a chance to watch Sanchez play alot, since he played down here. This kid is really savvy and smart. Probably not as much skillz as Booty supposedly, but this should be a good battle. As far as the rest of the nation. I think its too early to say. However, honestly I really don't think Texas will win the NC next year. Even with Vince Young back. Texas will learn from SC this year that EVERYONE will be gunning for them. Sure many teams came hard after Texas this year. But trust me, it is MUCh different than when you are the top dog. The whole nation will want UT to go down now, just the way they wanted SC, and Miami to go down. But who knows. Vince Young sure did prove alot in that game. I really don't know much about Ohio States defense. How much they are losing, but if everythign is in tack with OSU, then to me they are the favorites. Even WITH Vince Young. Out of the ACC I like Va Tech, but only if Vick doesn't pull any stupid bullshit like he did this past year. |
PSU's losing MRob, Hali, Paxton, Rice, the whole secondary and 4/5ths of the oline. The new QB will be Anthony Morelli, a traditional drop back QB. However, we return the same WR corps and the RBs from this year.
If Levi Brown returns for this senior year and the OL prospects pan out, the offense will be decent. I personally think we have the personnel to be the offense of 1994; explosive, fast, and able to drop 50+ on anyone. The offense will have to score points because the defense may lose Poz to the NFL and will struggle a bit. I don't think we'll be top 5 again but I'm thinking bowl game, probably the Capital One bowl or Outback Bowl. 2007 will be the team to contend again for National Championship consideration. |

I do think (hindsite is always 20/20, isn't it?) that if Ohio State's quarterback situation had been stable, (that is to say, if Troy Smith had played the whole game) they would have beaten Texas in Columbus last year. In the end, though, that didn't happen and that, as they say, is that. |
See ya later Baby VICK
This was the last straw, just incase you missed it RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick was dismissed from the team Friday, the result of numerous legal transgressions and his unsportsmanlike conduct in the Toyota Gator Bowl. Marcus Vick AP/Phil Coale Marcus Vick, eluding a Louisville defender in the Gator Bowl, stepped on the leg of another Cardinal player who tackled him in the first half. University president Charles Steger announced the dismissal on the same day that coach Frank Beamer met with Vick and his mother in their Hampton Roads home, the school said. Beamer informed them of the decision during the meeting. Vick, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, was suspended from school in 2004 for several legal problems. The junior came under new and intense scrutiny this week after replays showed he stomped on the left calf of Louisville All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil during the Jan. 2 bowl. No penalty was called on the play and Vick claimed its was accidental. He further hurt his cause by claiming to have apologized to Dumervil, but the Louisville player said no such apology was ever offered. On Friday, it was revealed that Vick had been stopped for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license in Hampton on Dec. 17. Vick's license had been taken away last year when he was cited for reckless driving and marijuana possession in New Kent County. Steger suspended Vick from school at that time, and warned that any additional problems would effectively end his time as a member of the Hokies' football team. "The university provided one last opportunity for Vick to become a citizen of the university and readmitted him in January 2005, with the proviso that any future problems would result in automatic dismissal from the team," Steger said Friday. Beamer said in a statement that he was disappointed with the outcome. "I'm very disappointed that this didn't have a better ending," Beamer said in a statement. "We wanted what's best for this football team and Marcus. I certainly wish him the best." School officials said in a statement that there would be no further comment until a news conference on Saturday. Beamer, Steger and athletic director Jim Weaver, who said the stomping embarrassed the university, were all expected to attend. |
I like seeing Iowa on the list, anywhere, but am worried about how they'll do after losing Hodge and Greenway. Those guys are the shit.

SDSU's first season under Chuck Long.....will we FINALLY make it to a bowl game??
|
As if last week wasn't enough, now he pulls a gun out at 3 teenagers. I guess Baby Vick just doesn't learn.
