Ole Miss?
 

I have heard people mentioning Rush at this university, but is it tougher that most universities? I mean, if they have a pan hellenic council, can it be that different?

are they meaner at Ole miss or are there just not enough houses for everyone? and is everyone expected to join one or something? and is the competition that fierce that every girl rushes?

There are many other threads about recruitment at Ole Miss on GC...however, we aren't mean! Ole Miss recruitment is just a bit more competitive and it is like any other southern (especially SEC) school.

There probably aren't enough houses, but the problem is that Ole Miss and its students are very steeped in TRADITION and a new house that came in would probably have a problem attracting people from the older groups. And if the girls don't get the group they want, they often drop out of recruitment completely. It's like going to the mall and saying you'll find the perfect prom dress or you won't go to the prom at all, you won't get a (in your eyes) "just OK" prom dress.

Most of the national sororities are aware that's the way things are here and as such are wary of investing beacoup bucks in a new chapter that may not do well.

they drop out if they don't get the one they want? I don't mean to offend anyone, but that's absolutely the stupidst thing I have ever head of. I understand that it must be dissapointing, but if your sole purpose of going ot a unvierstiy is to join the right sorority, as opposed to schoalship and self imporvemet, then they really shound't have been there in the frist place. A GLO should enhance the college experience, not determine it.

so basically, you must have a relative that was in a house if you want to join it?

Being a legacy sometimes isn't enough at Ole Miss anymore, as we've seen in recent years the number of legacies that get cut in the early rounds.

You can bitch about how stupid the Ole Miss (or any other SEC school, for that matter) rush tradition is stupid, but that's just the way it is. I've never been through rush there, but the SEC rush tradition is in a class by itself, so your "you don't go to a university just to join a sorority" doesn't really apply here.

Normally we caution our GC PNMs to be discreet with what info they reveal about themselves, their campus, and their recruitment. Perhaps this should be extended to what PNMs think about rush on campuses other than their own. I don't know, something about your posts just rubs me the wrong way, and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

I am probably the last person to critique a someone's writing. jojo7471, your writing makes it hard for me personally to take you seriously. I do not find your original post suspect, maybe a bit young. However, your follow-up post is another story.

But for a lot of us, that's how it is/was. A lot of stuff that's supposed to be just isn't. I've stopped trying to explain "the point" of being in a sorority to non-Greeks who are convinced that it's stupid, because it's impossible to explain and even if I could I'm not sure they would understand because they've never experienced it. Unless you're someone whose family members are Greek and you've been groomed since birth to join their sorority, and you're rushing at a school like Ole Miss, you just won't understand why getting into the "right" sorority is so important to some people.

I didn't mean to make greek life sound stupid, I was just shocked to find out that people would drop out of college because they couldn't get into one they wanted. I understand about getting into the 'right' sorority, my sister has been telling me to join hers since I was 12. But I also feel that maybe, while I respect the traditions they have at schools, I feel that people shouldn't give up a higher education because of it.

I don't think anyone is saying that someone drops out of COLLEGE because they did not get into their prefered house, what people are saying is that a lot of women will drop out of RECRUITMENT when they are no longer extended an invitation to a party at the "right" house (what ever that phrase means)

What she said. jojo, you misinterpreted 33girl's post. SHE NEVER SAID THAT THESE GIRLS DROP OUT OF SCHOOL IF THEY DON'T GET THEIR SORORITY! THEY DROP OUT OF RECRUITMENT!

I personally don't understand why someone would drop out of rush either instead of completing the process to seeing what happened, but then again a) I got my first choice b) I don't go to Ole Miss. So I really can't judge.

but jojo, there ARE women who will drop out of college, or finish out the semester and then transfer, if they don't get the sorority they want. it does happen, but hopefully it isn't often.

i have also heard of women who are somewhat insecure of their chances getting into a particular sorority at a particular college, so they enroll in a college with a chapter of the same sorority, only this chapter is easy to get in. they go thru the new member program, initiate, finish out the semester, then transfer to "difficult u." and apply to affiliate with the more "prestigious" chapter(in their eyes). sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. you see, the chapter has the option of accepting them for membership, or not.

you are so right, jojo. college is so much more than greek life. greek life can enhance the college experience, but it should not define it.

wait, if some joins XYZ at one school, they aren't considered a sister a XYZ at antoher school? I thought that since it's national, all sisters are considered to be sisters anywhere. Is that wrong? I kinda just assumed, but I never really asked anyone.

You would always be an "ABC" but a chapter on another campus is not required to accept you as an affiliate. Please do a search on transferring schools if you're truly interested in this subject.

This is so true.

We've had instances where girls from my chapter transfer to schools with AGD chapters on the mainland. One went where she was welcomed with open arms, the new chapter received a letter of recommendation from our chapter, and she paid the affiliate fee. In order for her to affiliate, the chapter's EC had to approve it.

Another sister transferred to a school where she COULD have affiliated, but she could not see herself living in that house. She thought these girls, despite sharing the same letters, were stuck up bitches and refused to affiliate. She said that if she had gone through rush at this campus, there was no way in hell she would have gone AGD. :o

You also have to take into consideration the chapters that are already full who can't take any more girls. They won't have room for sisters who want to affiliate.
