Katrina Wasn't Cat 4

Researchers Say Katrina Was Weaker Than Believed
By JOHN PAIN, AP

MIAMI (Dec. 21) - Researchers say Hurricane Katrina was a weaker storm than first thought when it slammed the Gulf Coast, with the strength of a Category 3 storm instead of a Category 4.

Story

The question on the poll is if it changes your opinion of how it was handled....

I just had a call from a friend who is freelancing for FOX and ABC in NO.

I told him he's a wimp.

I don't think it changes my opinion on how it was handled. All hurricanes are bad, so I am not belittling any other huge storms that have hit other areas and caused catostrophic damage and casualties, =however= New Orleans is practically a bowl... and if they knew THAT MUCH water (i.e. a hurricane) was headed that way, I think more should have been done to prepare for it.

Whenever storms come up, news stations all around give everyone the "worst case scenario" so it wasn't a complete shocker to the Govt that the levey could possibly break causing catostrophic damage. They knew it the possibility was there. There was an article I read long ago that stated how many times the govt was requesting funds to help strengthen the levey, and all the time they were turned down b/c they figured the levey was good "enough". I bet they felt like a bunch of idiots when the levey finally did break.

And now that entire area is still in shambles MONTHS later. Evacuees are still living in hotels all over the country and now FEMA is saying they are going to stop paying for those hotel rooms.

We heard tonight on TV that based on the old hurricane scales it would be a cat. 3, however Bay St. Louis and some other areas had a storm surge of almost 48 feet...that is more than a cat. 3 scale...perhaps they need to redo the scale...but regardless, my parents house is gone...Katrina was a big ole girl!
