New Hobby Suggestions

So Ive decided I need to meet more people and not necessarily through the sorority route and people keep telling me to pick up a new hobby...so my question to you all is what are some good hobbies I can start that would help increase my circle of friends?

Sorry to crash...

Maybe a book club, take a scrapbooking class, check the local paper's classified for community events, etc. Supper clubs are big here where groups get together once a month or every couple of weeks to have dinner together. They switch houses and take turns making dinner.

Team sports leagues...

bowling, volleyball, basketball, golf

card clubs

volunteering...(red cross, girl scouts, boy scouts, library, hospital auxiliary, etc)

taking a class to learn something new through community ed or Community college...

Sports leagues are always fun.... You could maybe get 2 friends together (just so you don't have to go alone) and sign up for co-ed volleyball or something.

Lots of cities have programs that are specifically geared toward twenty-somethings. They have the games early, then everyone goes to the bar together where there are specials set up. Fun times!!!!

Also, I don't know if your alma mater has a big population where you live now... But I met a ton of people my age by going to Happy Hours hosted by my local A&M club.

Book clubs could be fun, but you might not be as likely to meet women your age.

I'm kind of in the same situation as you, so if I think of anything else, I'll let you know. :)

Lindz- Considering my alma mater is in PA, the chances that there will be a sufficient enough alumn in the area to have an event are pretty slim but I know of a chapter sister that organized a get together for TX alumn so I might look into that.

I thought about the gym but the chances of me going realistically are pretty slim.

LOL, yeah I have found that to be a problem too. Damnit. :p

I'm sorry, but that last line has me laughing semi-hysterically! My doctor recommended a stress test for me last year, and I practically screamed, "Stress! I need to take a test to see if I'm STRESSED?!?!?! You BET I'm stressed!!!" I'm shocked that he didn't put me on Prozac.

On the other hand, I'd try to map out exactly what type of people you want to meet: male, female, both, crafty, sporty, intelligent, or whatever, and go from there. You're not going to meet men at a scrapbooking club - although it's terribly relaxing. While you'll meet men at a boy scout group, you stand the chance of being pigeon-holed as "the woman".

FWIW, I met my exhusband AND my exfiance at a club for sports.

I'm in the same boat, since I'm in a new city. I'm not worried about meeting anyone new yet though. I do have the option of the local alum association, so I'll start there. After that, I'll branch out.
I am planning on starting to go to a gym. It helps that there is a class at the same time M-F that i want to do. M,W,F it's cardio kickboxing, T it's step aerobics plus the body ball and TH it yoga. I think that being 25 lbs over my ideal weight is not helping our attempts to pro-create. That's the biggest motivation I've had to go to the gym in a LONG while (hence the 25 lbs!)

I would check your local library... In most libraries people will post fliers about local activities going on... I found a local knitting group (yes I am 23 and knit), unfortunately it meets when I have to be at work/school... But those types of activities usually get posted...

You never know - I never expected San Diego to be a hot bed of Valpo alumni, until I found out about "Homecoming West" (when Valpo plays the University of San Diego in football every other year here in San Diego - it's an interesting night! :))

Don't have too much advice on the hobby thing - right now I'm just trying to keep my head afloat with getting all my reading and papers done for school! :p

Shoot. I'm still trying. I went down to RMH to offer my services with event planning and they have auxilary groups for Young Professionals. There are actually a lot of young professionals clubs out there with active groups for social and service.

I've always been interested but ended up rather lazy!

Junior League is a big committment but a good way to meet people. And you can always latch onto other alumni clubs. UCF didn't have much of a presence in Los Angeles (imagine that!) and I ended up befriending some U of Michigan grads-- they dragged me to all of their events and now I'm a big fan!!!

If anyone would like to say you're me and join a Pitt club, there's quite a few Pitt clubs around the country. You have to promise to say the Dr. Brumble is the most horrible professor to ever draw breath, however! :D

I know knitting is back as a old-time favorite hobby but now popular again- personally I've decided I want to learn how to do it and plan to take a couple of classes after the New Year!
