Gamma Gamma Chi Muslim Sorority makes national news

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=5052885

A pretty nice story, but I didn't like the implication that other Panhellenic sororities 'condone' alcohol.

I also loved how the ad on the page was for a Hanukkah CD.

There are at least 2 other threads on this sorority already.

dang it, beat me to it. It was on Morning Edition this AM...Imagine my surprise at 5 AM on my way home from work!

I think we all thought the same thing....

On my way to work this morning I heard the beginning of the story....interesting

I think an Islamic sorority is a truly fabulous idea. Furthermore, I would love to see a network of Islamic sororities and fraternities establish themselves within the nation. If NPC, NPHC and MGC approach Islamic sororities and fraternities with open arms, we help to embrace a significant cultural presence in America. I have always believed and will always believe that we as Americans will never get beyond our issues with Islamic society until we begin to embrace it.

I am cheering for the girls of Gamma Gamma Chi and hope that they can realize their dream!

As to the implication about condoning alcohol, I would just take it as face value. They don't condone alcohol. I'm assuming its just an expression of their values.

Yeah, great. That way terroist-breeding mosques can have ready-made cells on our nation's campuses. What a tremendous idea.

I agree. We should get rid of all the Jewish sororities too....I mean, diversity in the greek community....please we don't need it. Where do these girls get off trying to find sisterhood....a bond with others of the same religion, culture, and interests...HOW DARE THEY!

I hope everyone sees the sarcasm here.

I suggest Stripper learn some tolerence. And don't turn it around that I support Terrorism, because you'll just be messing up a great thread.
I'm sure the Founders of all sororities that were new and different when established faced prejudice. I'm proud to support the women who were bold enough to start this new sorority.

This was so over-the-top ignorant that I actually giggled.

We should not only get rid of this sorority, but get rid of all mosques, Islamic communities, not allow Muslim immigration, get rid of people who have converted to Islam, and get rid of those damned Muslim Boy Scout troops.

I feel safer just typing that.

wouldn't a muslim boy scout troop be an oxymoron?i thought boy scouting is based on christian ideals, hence the intolerance for gay scouts or gay scout masters.i think i remember a big brou-haha a year or two ago where the boy scouts might lose their united way funding due to gay intolerence

You think Christians are the only religious group that discriminates against gays?

-- and no, BSA allows all denominatinos of religions. I believe they even have an award for completing a course of religious study in Islam.

-- and they do:

Whatever you think it may be, there are Muslim members of "regular" troops and entire Muslim Boy Scout Troops. Time magazine did an article on it.

There are plenty of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. Boy Scouts, both in the US and around the world. The only "group" that would be catagorically excluded from Scouting are atheists, since they would not be able to promise "Duty to God." As long as a Scout can promise duty to God, who/whatever the Scout and his family understand God to be (or her family -- there are girls in BSA programs), Scouting has no problem with it, and simply encourages the Scout to be true to his own religious beliefs.

And it's probably a bit much to characterize the BSA's "gay policy" as intolerent, at least as to Scouts themselves. While there is more or less a "ban" on openly-gay leaders (I know, don't ask, don't tell), there is also pretty much a prohibition on asking a Scout whether he is gay or not. In my experence, if the Scout doesn't make a big deal of it, neither does anyone else.

And as ktsnake says, it's also probably a bit much to lay the "gay policy" on "christian ideals," since most other religions share the traditional Christian view. The Dalai Lama takes a rather hardline view on the subject, as I recall.

FSUZeta 12-20-2005 05:56 PM

ktsnake, i never said that christians were the only religious group intolerent of gays.

mystic cat, thank you for educating me on boy scouting. how neat that scouting includes all religions.
