Clemson Student Paper Lists "Top Sororities"

The December 9, 2005 issue of The Tiger has an article about the "best" sorority at Clemson. Also mentioned are two other sororities that, with the "best," make up the "top three."

I'm not sure who determines this kind of ranking, or how the decision is made at Clemson. Nor do I know whether students or potential new members take this very seriously. I would hope that an article like this wouldn't influence PNMs to narrow their options during recruitment.

As pleased as I may be with the results of this article (and my sisters), I too would not like to see PNMs make rash decisions based on factors that wouldn't benefit each PNM on an individual basis.

I would hope that the article being part of a "best of" series would temper opinions somewhat. The other catagories are best...

fraternity
haircut
major
professor & lecturer
teaching assistant
off-campus housing
on-campus housing
fad.

This just sounds like one of those random polls that the student papers do - I think Pitt has one also. Whoever wants to respond does, it's not "scientific" at all. I don't think it would be a major factor during rush.

First off, I just have to say a quiet Yay ADPi!.

Ok then.... I agree definitely that it's not a scientific poll by any means. But, I will say that when they discussed WHY certain sororities are "best", most of the reasons they gave were nice. They talked about their academic performance, as well as a lot of other acvitities that the ladies are involved in. It wasn't about partying, drinking, mixing with fraternities, and wearing the best clothes. And I liked the quote from the president.

I also like how they pointed out that Zeta's fundraiser raised more money than any other event on campus.

I hope it wouldn't discourage PNMs from pledging other houses, and I don't think it will. Hopefully it will have the effect of making women want to rush in general, just to be a part of the greek system as a whole. :)

It says that ADPi
"Founded in 1851, they also hold the title of first sorority ever"...I thought Gamma Phi Beta was termed "Sorority" first?

Yes, the word sorority was coined for Gamma Phi Beta... a better way to phrase this ADPi fact would be to say that Alpha Delta Pi was the first secret women's organization. This is what we say about Phi Mu (of course, we say second :p ) because we were both started before the word sorority was made. Phi Mu remains a fraternity, but I think that Alpha Delta Pi somewhere along the line made the switch to using the word "sorority" officially.

Officially, we are the "First secret society for college women". People say we are the first sorority because we were founded before the others.

ETA: Oops, we posted at the same time. :)

Let the bashing of anything that hints at an objective difference between organizations begin!

Universities often employ ranking systems for fraternities -- our campus awards 'gold', 'silver', and 'bronze' to the chapters on campus based upon things like academic performance (and maybe that's it?).

I watched a show on A& E yesterday called "House Flipping" or Flip that house or something like that. The owner of a real estate development corp in Charleston, SC was an alumnus of Clemson and Sigma Nu Fraternity. He went back to Clemson and to the Sigma Nu house when he bought some apartments there to turn into condos. His neice was a "sorority girl" there and he was going to let her and some of her sorority sisters live in one of the condo groups as a kind of sorority house.

As I watched several sterotypical moments I thought....ooohhh the ladies on GC are not going to like this! LOL He kept talking about the sorority girls and how they were going to be great sales people to get the fraternity guys to come over and buy one of the condos. Then he had one of his assistants who never went to college spend an evening with the girls doing, in the words of one of the sisters "rush, pledging and initiation in one night". They put crazy make-up on her, made her drink and lot and do crazy stuff like ask a boy for a kiss

NebraskaDelt 12-12-2005 06:59 PM

I saw the show as well. I didn't think it was a big deal. The local developers do the same thing as far as trying to rent apartments. As far as the pledging, initiation thing in one night, I didn't mind that either.

Could you figure out which sorority it was?

the newspaper survey is just an online survey anyone can fill out...you don't even have to go to school at clemson. the survey has other things in it too like best places to live on and off campus and best professor. we don't really take the survey seriously when it comes to any category. it's just for fun. when it comes to recruitment, the survey's not really a big topic of discussion. and to answer the other question, i caught a bit of that show on a & e yesterday and i could tell from the girl's bag that she was an adpi.

AchtungBaby80 12-12-2005 10:13 PM

Well, at least it's nice to see a sorority getting recognized for doing something positive! Would we rather see them being judged on more shallow criteria?
