University of Colorado Athletics woes...

Having gone through a sex/recruiting scandal in which the former Athletic Director and others were replaced, the University of Colorado Athletic Department is facing another crisis.

Last week, Head Football Coach Gary Barnett, who survived the scandal was "fired" just before a minor bowl game. The timing seemed strange.

Barnett will not coach the team during that game.

As it turns out a report by state auditors will be released today questioning accounting and expenditures related to Barnett's football camp and expenses for bowl trips.

Speculation is that Barnett will not come out looking very good.

An earlier audit of the main Colorado booster organization questioned large purchases of liquor for events.

A former president and some regents have also left under the cloud of questionable academic creditials and other concerns regarding faculty members.

C.U. should create a course in not shooting itself in the foot.

ETA both www.9news.com and www.kcncnews4.com have stories on this today.

Here's one of them: http://cbs4denver.com/topstories/loc...346122328.html

Saying that a place kicker deserved what she got because she wasn't a good kicker anyway = okay.

Fudging on your expense reports for a bowl game = firing offense.

Anyone see a problem with that?

I guess that depends on what part of "what she got" you're talking about.

She alleged that she was sexually harassed, groped, etc.

I know you agree that, obviously, that's not OK.

Pointing out the fact that she is a bad kicker is no problem. The timing of the comment might have been better.

ETA I would also point out that Katey Hnida was a very small part of the overall investigation.

It also included alleged hookers and alcohol arranged for high school recruits and even reported rapes.

I wish I got his severance package.

I don't think many college athletics programs and booster clubs would stand up very well to real scrutiny and openness.

Major Conf. Football coaches, especially, and other coaches to some degree, often consider themselves "kings" deserving a little extra.

Wasn't there a prev. Colorado coach whose teenage daughter had babies fathered by two different players of another race? And then he founded a "pro-God" bunch?

Badjocks.com reports:

Colorado Football Player and Cross Country Star Girlfriend Leave School After Allegedly Sending Racist Email -

As if the University of Colorado football program needed any more controversy after coach Gary "Nothing Happened" Barnett was let go by the school, now comes word that a football player, upset over the Buffalos loss to Texas and believing that the recipient was making unwanted advances made toward his girlfriend, allegedly wrote a typo-ridden email with racist threats . . . including one to drag the guy behind a car! CU football player Clint O'Neal and his girlfriend, Jackie Zeigle, both white--received tickets for harassment and ethnic intimidation tickets after they allegedly sent the threatening message to CU student-athlete Greg Castro. Both have left the school, but claim it was for personal reasons having nothing to do with the message. Here's the complete text (minus expletives) of what was sent. Should the author even be in college? (Denver Post)

You're close -- but a little too sensational.

Former Coach Bill McCartney's (The founder of Promise Keepers) daughter had the child of a former Colorado quarterback who happend to be black.

I say happened in the past tense, because he died of Cancer shortly after that.

In any event, I don't see what that has to do with this situation.

Yeah, a cool $3Mil wouldn't be a bad parting gift would it?

Actually I have a bet going with someone on this. Did they ever list his actual salary?

Daughter Kristyn did it twice. Don't remember if #2 was a quarterback or not.

Did the coach or the father die?

It's just another example of Colorado athletics lacking morality.

I would say from that quote he is referring to the quarterback.

BigCityStripper 12-12-2005 07:13 PM

Sal Aunese (sp?) is the name of the Buffs QB that had a daughter with McCartney's daugher and then succumbed to cancer. And he wasn't black, he was Samoan IIRC.

I'm glad Barnett is fired, the guy is a douchebag. From the Hnida situation, to the sexual harassment of female trainers by football players, to the organized drinking and orgies on recruiting trips the guy did a horrible job representing CU. I don't care if it was players organizing the recruiting parties, he is the head coach and it is his responsibility to ensure that recruiting trips are being conducted in a manner that represents the University well. CU is better off without this guy and his mysoginistic attitude towards women.

$3 Million is his separation agreement. I don't know what his salary was.

Hoosier, what point are you trying to make? What a coach's daughter does hardly reflects on the Athletic Department.

Big City, you're correct -- it's been a while and the details have gotten a little fuzzy. We televised the game after Sal died (Colorado at Washington) and it was a very touching experience.

Gary Barnett...yet another Missouri Beta (Ken Lay was another one...Sam Walton not as bad, but there are plenty of people who don't like him either) dragging our name through the mud. Several of us in my chapter have tried to get our presidents at the time to bring him up for a membership review at convention...as of yet, nothing. I'm working on it though.
