hi, i'm sorry if this has bene posted before, I am new to greekchat. i go to a smaller PA state school as as of last semester my sorority is the only local left (there are 6 NPC's in addition to us) We are also the oldest sorority on campus.

Recruitment is always a struggle, we don't have what you might call a "close" greek community" basically, there is alot of trash talking, and being local gives others a little more fuel for the fire.

We are also a small organization (I am president, as well as recruitment chair) and we are currently running into a few problems...namely we have alot of newer sisters who've never gone through recruitment on this side, and I am planning a workshop so we can go over what to say/not to say/ how to answer the "well what can you offer me since i cant get job contacts" horrible question that we are guarenteed to ask?

First step, breathe. Relax. You'll be fine. Your sorority wouldn't be the oldest if your sisterhood wasn't strong.

1) Do a "3 positives, 1 negative" evaluation of your chapter. Do it in a casual setting (not chapter meeting). Do you have great academics? Won Greek Week? Have a great philanthropy? Great chapter diversity? Emphasize that in recruitment.

2) The "no contacts" thing isn't true. You've got an alumnae base to use. You're the oldest chapter, remember? :)

3) Bring your alumnae around during your pre-recruitment warm up. They've often got great ideas from the old days and may be able to help you out.

4) Try to do a non-recruitment event for the campus. We did a movie night in one of the lecture rooms. Got a Greek movie, some popcorn, put up flyers, and people from other greek organizations and PNMs came. After the movie we discussed how it was different from the reality of greek life. It was good, casual, and not overbearing.

(Another idea is to hook up with another org (sorority or fraternity) and bring a speaker to campus. A couple organizations on my campus regularly hook up with our NPHC groups to bring diversity speakers to campus. )

5) Letters, we've got letters, we've got bags and bags of letters... To that extent, wear your letters often. Make sure people see your sisters answering questions in class in letters, around campus in letters, everywhere in letters. Identify yourselves with your letters.

the University panhellenic has decided to have a theme this year of hollywood, and for one of our rounds this year, each sorority has a designated movie - ours is "In Her Shoes". We are planning everthing around a girly, glittery, high heels, etc. theme. For the one round, we are having an emeralds and diamonds party (our colors are green and white), and we're making snacks, etc. for the next (house) round, we are having a "greek goddess" round, still using the goddess to play into the girly, peace on earth and really cute shoes theme. (plus our house has 2 greek pillars in the living room, so it should be fin and easy to decorate). And the last round is going to be a ritual formal round. But I have a problem - there is one more round in between the greek goddess's round, and the ritual round. I was wondering if you maybe had any suggestions as to what I could do here? I am about to be at a loss!

Our individual sorority theme is "walk a mile in our shoes, you'll never want to take them off" and then we are getting shirts with this and a bunch of shoes (cute high heels, etc.) on them.

For the round you aren't sure about, dedicate it to
DIVERSITY!

keep your shoe theme and set up displays for ...


Sneakers: Intramural sports

High heels: Socials and date functions!

Work Boots: community service

Casual sandals: hanging around with friends/sisterhood

School-colors Shoes: School spirit, campus involvement and football!

An Empty Pair of Shoes: Walk a mile in our shoes. Go Alpha Sigma!


Or you could dedicate the day to PHILANTHROPY. Decorate in the colors of the pet project you devote yourself to for the year. Talk about your other community service and fundraisers, and social opportunities within fundraising. What is your philanthropy? Does it change year to year?
