Jessa -

Local sororities only exist on one campus or only on regional campuses. They are governed locally by the university or their alumnae chapter if there is one. If there is an alumnae chapter, it is probably restricted to the city in which the sorority was founded.

National sorororities are just that, national. They exist on dozens of different campuses in the US and Canada. Because they are national, if you change universities chances are that you can affiliate with the chapter at that campus or at the very least the alumnae chapter in the area. National sororities offer scholarships, educational programs and leadership opportunities. There are alumnae chapters nationally and the opportunity to serve in district, province and national leadership positions as well as the National Panhellenic Conference.

There are 26 sororities affiliated with the NPC (Nat'l Panhellenic Conference). In addition there are some Latino, Asian and career based sororities that do have chapters in different state, however not with in the same numbers as the NPC groups.

In addition there are 4 nationally affiliated sororities that are historically African-American. See http://www.nphc.org for more info.

If you have to go around telling everyone you're in charge you're not much of a leader.
