Saturday Night Fever
Over Thanksgiving my family and I watched Saturday Night Fever and got in a really weird conversation about the character of Stephanie.
Some people think that Stephanie is completely full of crap and all her "knowledge" is completely from her sugar daddy/mentor guy friend. Other people think that yes, her sugar daddy/mentor guy friend is teaching her things but that she does in fact have a job in Manhattan, has met Al Pacino, etc and will go to school to better herself. I will keep my opinion to myself but I feel that her character is not a sympathetic character at all because she's living a lie and being so bombastic and needs people like Tony to make herself feel better about herself. My family is weird I guess because we were really analyising this movie. Delirious from turkey I guess! What do you guys think? |
Wow, we just sleep after we have turkey. Ha ha.
I think she really does have a job but she's really insecure because all her life she thought her knowledge of the world was fine until she went to The Big City and realized how sheltered she was. I find her sympathetic because coming from a very teeny town, I can relate to what she's going through because I kind of did too. I remember when I would listen to the Pittsburgh radio stations and hear ads for this store or that, or a club that was broadcasting and just think I would never be cool enough to go there. Now that I have - well - it's just another store/club/whatever. And I managed to do it without a sugar daddy, LOL. |
Okay, I'll do my amateur psychologist bit on Stephanie :)
Actually, I came across many Stephanies when I lived/worked in NYC (although most of them were named Gina, not Stephanie). My take is that she was a secretary at a Manhattan public relations shop or maybe a show business agent's office or movie production company. So, she would have had the opportunity to meet Al Pachino and other famous people, but it's not like she was hanging out with them or anything. More like she'd have been asking them what they wanted in their coffee. But, still, that's meeting someone! I don't think she was a stupid girl; she probably picked up enough knowledge about several subjects to sound like she knew what she was talking about to someone she considered inferior to her (ie Tony and his friends), but I bet a lot of what she said she was just parroting from her boss/sugar daddy/older guy friend. Remember how she referred to something as "neat" and he lit into her, saying that "nobody says 'neat' anymore"? I felt like she would like the opportunity to go to school, but probably never will. I don't like her either, but not because I think she's living a lie (not a lie; more like an exaggeration). I definitely think she was using poor, dumb Tony as a sounding board so she could talk about things that made her feel better about herself. Of course, I didn't really like anyone in that movie except for poor Annette (who now plays the mom on a Disney Channel show. If her Disney children only KNEW  ). And also, I had one of those fluffy jackets just like hers! lol Please pardon all the tense jumping in my reply! What is your take on the character, aabby? Your family sounds fun, BTW :) |

So interesting!
My mom is completely positive that Stephanie is a dumb broad who is being spoon fed by that guy. My uncle thinks the fact that several of us watched it makes us complete lons but didn't hesitate dancing step by step to every dance moove from the super sexy John Travolta. So sick. My sister thinks she (Stephanie) is really working where she says, taking classes and is just now beginning to feel smart. Personally, being a dancer, I don't see what all the fuss is about Stephanie. She can't dance. At the ballet barre she sucks big times. And, it was noted that it took me YEARS to realize that there was a rape in the movie and that he committed suicide. So now my family thinks I'm a complete moron but who cares, they still love me! |
