Not that I understand the BCS ranking an all, but I know that the National Championship Game is the Fiesta Bowl again, so it will be USC vrs. ? (this makes me wish I still worked at Sun Devil Stadium so I could work another National Championship Game).


I heard on the news yesterday that ASU will be going to the Insight Bowl (which means they must have gone up in the BCS rankings, since yesterday afternoon they were ranked 6 and the Insight bowl takes PAC-10 #4 and Big East 2/3). Told my parents that we had to go to the Insight Bowl. Although tickets aren't even on sale yet. Gonna have to get them early with all the other ASU fans (and BOB, or whatever it's called now, doesn't hold nearly the capacity of SDS, which SDS holds 75,000).

Anyone know anything about the Rose Bowl?

Again not knowing rankings I'm not sure who is going to where, other than the Bowls held here in AZ.

Actually the Rose Bowl is the National Championship game this year. and it's going to be USC vs Texas (assuming UT doesn't lose to Colorado in the Big XII Championship game)

The BCS is only used to calculate the top two teams and then if Notre Dame gets in to a BCS bowl. Beyond that a team only has to be in the top 12 of the final BCS standings to go to a BCS Bowl (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange)

The rest of the bowl selections do not have any use for the BCS rankings, and instead go based on Conference contracts. What they mean when they say that a certain bowl takes the conference #3 or #5 is to establish the order in which bowls get to choose from bowl eligible teams in that conference. The bowls can pick any bowl eligible team from that conference. In that case they will look at the matchup of the teams in their game, which teams travel well (means more tickets sold) and past relationships with the teams in question. For example, Nebraska is unlikely to go to the Independence Bowl b/c of problems that occurred between the native LSU fans and the Nebraska fans (even though Nebraska played Ole Miss a lot of LSU fans went to the game to taunt Nebraska and their fans...I've heard some pretty bad stories and people never going back to Shreveport ever again b/c of it)

For example, with in the Big XII this is how the bowl tie in's run.

#1: BCS game
#2: Cotton Bowl
#3 Holiday Bowl
#4 Alamo Bowl
#5 Independence Bowl
#6 Houston Bowl
#7 Champs Sports Bowl
#8 Fort Worth Bowl

So for example, Texas Tech is going to the Cotton Bowl for sure (assuming UT doesn't lose). After that it get's pretty murky as to where everyone is going b/c you have 4 teams that are 7-4 (Oklahoma, Iowa State, Colorado, and Nebraska). Colorado will actually end up 7-5 b/c of the Big XII Championship game.

Therefore the Holiday Bowl gets to pick whoever they want (and could choose one of the 6-5 teams if they wanted).

So for ASU to go to the insight bowl doesn't mean that their win over U of A meant a damn thing in the BCS, just that the Insight bowl officials talked to the other bowls with Pac 10 tie ins and made sure that the bowls above them weren't going to choose ASU...given that the bowl is in the BankOne Ballpark, ASU makes the most sense for them to have good ticket sales...

Actually I don't think ASU is even ranked in the BCS. It's pretty safe to say that if you aren't ranked in either polls then you aren't ranked in the BCS. Too bad too. I honestly thought ASU had a good team this year but they just never recovered after the tough USC loss. I thought they could have made the Fiesta Bowl with a home crowd. Oh well.

Anyways, shouldn't you be a U o A girl though? Didn't you tell me you initiatd from ADPi at U of A there and graduated from the U of A? You can't love both!



I think the Holiday bowl will be Oregon vs Oklahoma this year. Unless Oregon pulls a miracle and makes it into the Fiesta. Then in that case it would be UCLA vs Colorado since no one wants to see UCLA play Oklahoma again!

Is the Holiday considered a "major" bowl? I mean, with all the bowl games out there (Shit, San Diego now has a second one, the Poinsettia Bowl, featuring Navy vs Colorado State) I was wondering how big people outside San Diego considered it to be.

Man that is one thing I always wondered myself. I guess the HOliday bowl is a pretty big bowl because it's in San Diego and all you know? I mean, I would much rather travel to San Diego than shitty ass Tampa, Orlando or El Paso. But yet Tampa and Orlando host New Years DAY bowls. In fact, Florida has alot of New Years DAY Bowls. Maybe that is why the Holiday bowl doesn't seem that big to us, because it's not on New Years day and is aired on ESPN instead of NBC or ABC. But the Holiday bowl does pay out pretty well. And it does have the PAC 10 #2.

I'd say that the Holiday Bowl is a BIG bowl. Take the #2 Pac-10 and the #3 Big XII and usually, you have two teams definitely in the top 25, if not the top 15. This year happens to be a really, really down year for the Big XII outside of UT (Which rightfully deserves a shot at USC), and so the Big XII rep will not be ranked that high.

The Holiday is on the same level as say the Cotton Bowl, Outback, and Gator Bowls. Definitely the tier below the BCS bowls, but no lower. And the Holiday Bowl, no matter who the teams are always provides a great game with some fantastic finishes. The games are always close.

I think that if they take UCLA, then they'll skip Oklahoma. If that happens, they won't take Colorado b/c they'll be 7-5, having been destroyed by Nebraska, and beaten by Iowa State. I think that Nebraska goes b/c we undoubtedly are one of the best traveling teams in the country (I have friends who went to bowl games every year of their life...until last year (35 year bowl streak ended). But a lot will depend on what UCLA does with USC next week. They win, they take Oregon's spot in SD, and then the Big XII representative becomes an interesting choice. They lose, and it will be Ducks/Sooners.

i love bowl games and big college football games in general. I go to Sac State which has like an average of 4,000 fans at each game, but this year we played our first game at Cal, man that was quite an experience! 65,000 people, and oh the parties at the fraternity houses just down the street!!! Damn I wish I went to a bigger sports school than Sac State...

anyway last year I was in Orlando for new years and I was going to go to the Capital One bowl, but grandma wouldnt let me take the car... :mad:

BobbyTheDon: I did intiate at U of A, but I transferred to ASU and graduated from ASU in December 02. When it comes to football support ASU (because ASU has generally had a better team although U of A is now getting much better). When it comes to basketball I support U of A. As long as an AZ school is winning I'm okay. LOL.
Even though I support ASU, I really can't say I have a strong allegiance to either one because I have ties to both schools. I kind of refuse to go into the mood of the whole "huge rivalry" issue with them.



Okay so here is the list I found from the net it lists all the 2005-2006 bowl games.

So I'm confused.

If the Rose Bowl is the National Championship game between BCS #1 & BCS #2, how come the Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl are listed as Championship Bowl games with no listing of which teams would go to them?

So because they are Bowl Championship Games would like BCS #3 go to Fiesta, #4 to Sugar and #5 to Orange?

The Orange, Sugar and Fiesta are part of the BCS. They rotate the National Championship game every year in Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange order.

This year the Fiesta would have been "hosted" by the Big XII conference Champ. Which means that so long as the Big XII champ isn't #1 or #2 in the final BCS standings, they would go to the Fiesta Bowl as the home team. The Big XII champ is not yet known, but safe to say it will be Texas...who is also #2 in the BCS rankings. Therefore, the Fiesta Bowl will get first pick to replace it's "host" since Texas will be in the Rose Bowl.

The Sugar is "hosted" by the SEC, and the Orange by the ACC. The hosting duties change from year to year, and in years in which the Rose is not the NC game, they try to keep the Pac-10/Big 10 alignment intact. But for this year, more than likely the Fiesta Bowl will try to keep the hosting arrangement by choosing the conference champs from either the Big 10 (or Little 11...who knew they had such problems with math up there), or the Big East or one of the Two At-Large teams. My guess would be Penn State or Notre Dame. But there is a lot that goes into it.

I hope that is a good enough explanation. Really, they just don't know how it will all play out.

It's doubtful Iowa State would get chosen for the Independence Bowl either as we were just there twice in the past 4 years. It would be nice to go to the Alamo Bowl, but if Rob's intel is correct and Iowa's already "chosen" as the Big10 team, there's no way Iowa State would get that bowl as the Big XII bid. If we would have beat fricken Kansas, we would have had a good shot at the Holiday bowl, but at best we're looking at the Houston bowl, which, even though it's in late Dec., is kind of disappointing. Iowa State fans travel well, also, so wherever we go, there will be a big crowd of Cyclones.

Our football players are convinced that we are likely going to the Outback Bowl...Tampa and Ybor City love the Gamecocks...and the Gamecocks love the Outback Bowl...hopefully this year we can come away with another win.

Back in '87 when Eastern Michigan was the MAC champ, we played in the California Bowl in San Jose. I wonder when it changed. (EMU never made it again, so I wouldn't know..lol)
