Help me! Style question for the ladies
 

I will be the first to admit that I am somewhat style-challenged when it comes to winter clothing. Especially this winter- I'm going to be in Philadelphia and NYC right before Christmas and I'm stumped as to what I'm going to wear! I have clothes that will work, my friends that live there told me to layer and get some of the Ugg boots (I HATE those boots) and to get thin thermals to wear under my clothes. I've got that covered.

Here's my current problem- I bought this beautiful long, tan peacoat. I never wear brown or tan, I just never really have. When it comes to basics, I wear a lot of black, sometimes grey, but I couldn't pass this coat up. Because I'm style-challenged, I'm not quite sure what kind of pants/skirts would work with this coat... I've got the shoes under control for once though.

Can anyone make suggestions? Seriously, I admit that I'm not the greatest shopper, I just don't know what to wear with this and I want to start mixing up my wardrobe a little bit!

Tan goes with EVERYTHING - a great purchase! Obviously, black or brown is natural, but grey works just as nice (navy and tan is awesome too). Maybe punch up with accesories like a red scarf and gloves - could go baby blue as well.

PS - Tip - be sure your boots have been treated for salt-resistance. Cities in the the snow belt between chicago and New York use a fair bit of salt, so protect your boots from salt stains (when they dry).

I agree with what NeonPi and PM_Mama00 said. I think since your coat is tan, you should go with darker colors underneath or at least darker colored pants. I think wearing one solid color (black shirt with black pants or dark brown shirt with dark brown pants or charcoal grey shirt with charcoal grey pants) underneath a pea coat looks really classy.

Also if you're going to be doing a significant amount of walking in the city, make sure you have footwear that's comfortable (not too high a heel) and non-slip.

Really? I'm a life-long Chicagoan, and I have NEVER worn thermals under my everyday clothes. Actually, if you're going to be out and about shopping or whatever, keep in mind that you won't be out in the cold for too long (I assume you'd be going from store to store, riding in cabs and the subway, etc.) and once you're in the shops, it'll be nice and toasty. You won't want to wear too many layers, otherwise you'll get overheated when you're inside. I find that wearing a sweater, a thick yet cute scarf (FOR GOODNESS SAKE, DO NOT GET A BURBERRY SCARF!!!), and a warm wool 3/4 length coat suit me just fine.

My coat is tan, almost identical to the darker tan one pictured above. I wear it with everything. I don't think you will have a problem with it not matching something in your closet.

With you tan coat, you can wear brown,black, red,or navy colored skirts or pants.

Make sure you have a warm hat, gloves, and scarf. Ugg boots are not a requirement. The boots shown with a low to moderate heel will work. Definitely spray them with the waterproof stuff, if they haven't been already treated.

RedRoseSAI makes a great point for the thermals. The only time I wear thermals under clothes is when the words "wind chill factor" are put before a low temperature number.

Thanks so much for the advice! I guess I do have stuff that will go with the coat- I'm trying to not buy too much before I go out there, I want to save my money for shopping!

I'll definitely keep what you've said in mind about the skirts and the thermals. I've lived in so CA all my life and the coldest I like to get is high 60s, low 70s, so this will be a step for me! And up until this week, it's been high 80s out here, which is hotter than normal, so I've been hanging out this winter in skirts and tank tops.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Wear pants, not skirts. Black, dark brown, or grey will go nicely with the tan coat. Forget thermal underwear unless it will be VERY cold. When you're outside, wear gloves or mittens, and wear a hat and/or scarf (I have a very warm pashmina scarf that I drape over my head and around my neck - toasty! :) ).
