Native Residential School Compenstion - Canada

Well it looks like the Canadian government finally decided to own-up and apologize for the sins of the past: The Residential Schools.

Quote:

Former students of native residential schools to get billions in compensation
OTTAWA (CP) - The federal government has proposed more than $2 billion in payments and healing programs to atone for decades of abuse in native residential schools.

If the deal is approved in court, survivors of rape, beatings and cultural isolation would likely be paid by the end of 2006. They now average age 60. Many are sick or dying.

The announcement was among a flurry of costly promises made in the final days before an expected election call.

All I can say is that it's about time, and that I hope this help to further heal the wounds and distrust between the Government and the First Nations.

I wonder if the U.S. will ever do anything like that - in the past, Native Americans were sometimes forced into residential schools that didn't treat them too well.

Probably won't happen...because it would open the door wider on the reparations debate.

If they paid one group of people for crimes committed against them generations ago, then they should have to pay ALL groups that had crimes committed against them, right?

But somehow people can apologize for taking people's land and forcing them on reservations, but we can't apologize for enslaving millions of people for hundreds of years because "I'm not responsible for the mistakes of my ancestors".

Is the government actually offering an apology or are they just going to give them money (sorry I couldn't read the article. The link won't open properly)?

The government is notorious for saying "here's some money for your troubles" but they won't actually admit that they did anything wrong.

Actually there has been numerous apolgies in the past - from the Anglican Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Canadian Government, and even the British Crown - some as long as 20 years ago (at the last First Ministers summit on Aboriginal Affairs).

Basically I think the government is doing this now in an effort to lay the issue to rest, and in an efforet to head of further legal cases stemming from the abuse - after all I think the Anglican Church in BC declared bankrupcy years back after a number of successful lawsuits.

Just out of courisity, was this done to only Native Americans and Canadians or other people in other parts of the world?

Havent all peoples been intruded on in some form or another?

I strongly urge you to write the consulates of the European nations involved.

No I'm serious. I will be even more helpful if you pursue this against France.
