Help me with my Greek Life project please :-)
Sisters,
I am working on a online museum exhibit (as part of a class) that looks at college fashions over the past 150 years (for my schools 150th anniversary). The item I choose to look at was Greek letter bags of the late 70s/early 80s. Most alum from those years told me that they called them thier "bitch bag". Heres my problem.... I need a picture! Does anyone who was in school in the late 70's or early 80's have a picture of their "bitch bag"? Jaime |
Sorry I can't be of help, but you might want to contact your local alumnae association, and if they can't be of help, talk to the campus Greek Adviser -- he should be able to put you in touch with alum advisers from other sororities who may connect you to someone local!

Let us know what you discover. I'll hate it if it turns out I missed a trend! |
Sorry to crash....
Yep, I pledged in the early 80's and we had "bitch bags". They were just your average canvas tote bag (about 14" x 18") with the sorority name all over it in a sorority color. like this: kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta kappa delta I wish I still had mine. It was cute! :( ETA: I looked for an old photo of someone with one but didn't find any. You might have some luck with photos by asking in one of the general forums. (what would it be? Chit chat? Greek life?) |

I'll have to look for that... Any other styles that we don't know about that we can help you with? ;) |
Sorry to barg in, but maybe it's a University of Maryland thing. I know that Leslie Anne was at College Park, Jamie isn't that where you are as well?

The printing was cute, though! |

YESSSSSS this is EXACTLY what I am talking about! Pictures anyone? Yes, its for UMCP.... I'll post the link for the exhibit when it's done. The greek items included are really neat! There are dance cards from the 1920's, formal dresses, pins, etc. |
I'm sure that mine's gone - but since they ALL had the same style, I'm searching for the style for you... Okay, it won't download right now (read: I'm doing something wrong!).
If you can find the font called "babyface", it would say adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi adpi only on an upward angle. |
JamieNicole, try contacting EO... we have an archivist and historian who may be able to help out. (You may just want to request some help finding a photo of ADPi's with tote bags at that time period and not call it by that other name, though...)
|
Thanks ladies.... all good idea! Thanks for your help, and just keep an eye open if you go through some old stuff over the holiday, (ADPi or any other group).
Thanks! Jaime |
While its on my mind....
If you could help me out.... Could respond with the years you were in college and the one "must have" greek item of that time. For example, you ALWAYS wore your pin, or EVERYONE wore lavaliers 24/7, or no one wore billboard letters but everyone had a polo shirt with embroidered letters on it (made that one up haha) Thanks! And of course you crazy board crashers should feel free to reply as well :D This project is not exclusive to ADPi, just thought it would be a good place to start! ~Jaime |
I pledged at a college here in the South in 1971. At that time, yes, lavaliers were big, as were jerseys-and usually each sorority stuck to wearing jerseys of their color only. All sorority pledges carried blue-bound "pledge books" with their letters on the front. Paddles hanging on walls were a must, and pretty much the only type of wood present given (they are now not allowed). This was before the internet, so the only way you could get Greek items was from your sorority headquarters via magazine, or the college bookstore! Oh, and pledge ribbons were worn during the pledge period.
|
We wore our lavaliers 24/7, too! And pledge ribbons the first week of pledging.
JamieNicole, how did the project work out? Do you have any photos on it? |
I think the project came out well! Here is the link to the news article about it:
