Good definition of liberal/conservative

Liberals want a timetable for pulling troops out of Iraq, but none for nudging Katrina evacuees out of (FEMA paid) hotels. Conservatives want the reverse.

And some of us might like both.

I pay FEMA huge amounts of insurance money and I'm hearing now that they are out of money completely. My Flood insurance costs more than two times my regular homeowners. If my house catches on fire and I lose everything, my homeowners puts me up in a hotel or alternate housing until my house is rebuilt. Why would I not expect the same from FEMA, who I pay more to and who has a lower risk with me than homeowners does?

Same here.

Look at how little the conservative government is helping them. It doesn't seem to me like they want to help too much. We have quite a few evacuees here, and many of them have heard absolutely nothing from FEMA even though they have contacted FEMA several times.

That's because many of the evacuees don't represent the "base" of the GOP/most conservative elected officials.

Atlanta area has some 12,000 evacuees living at taxpayer expense in motels, and about once a week to local lib newspaper runs a story about their "problems". The problem is usually how much time they spend looking for free housing, free food, and free clothing.

Never once has a story mentioned the story's subject looking for a job.

As long as these people are living and eating free, they'll stay where they are - that's human nature. You get more of what you reward.

Thousands of evacuees have restarted their lives, at their old hometown or in a new one, with new jobs or old ones, and we salute them. Thousands of others are coming to the end of their free ride.

That's due to the problems they cause. We had a lot of them at a National Guard camp about a half hour from here. Some of my brothers were there acting as MP's to keep the men from raping women, tearing up the barracks, terrorizing the people that live there, etc.

It's a sad state of affairs when that sort of thing happens.

Can you cite any reportage of that? They said lots of people were being murdered and raped in the SuperDome during the height of the crisis, but it turns out not to be the case after being thouroughly investigated.

Coramoor 11-22-2005 02:31 PM

There were no reports of rape, because when the women on the base started complaining of being bothered, the MPs immediatly stepped in.

The only articles on the situation (which didn't come from anyone working at the base first hand) was how the refugee's felt discriminated against because people were playing golf at the golf course next door.

I don't know how that is discrimination...but whatever. Maybe they felt that the golfer's should give them their golf clubs or something.

"If by liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties... if that is what they mean by a 'liberal', then I am proud to be a liberal."

Liberals from 40 years ago are much, much different from liberals today. I could respect liberals back then. Liberals today are worse than what I scrapped off my shoe this morning.

That's a nice quote, but the fact is that there are conservatives who care about all of those things too; it's a nice party speech, but beyond that the quote doesn't say too much.

At least someone admits it.
