2 letters vs. 3 letters
If this question has already been asked, I apologize. I did a search on this and didn't find the answer. I just wanted to know why some organizations have 2 greek letters, and other organizations have 3.
Thanks in advance. ------------------ "Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching." (Satchel Paige) |
it doesn't mean anything whether an org has 2 letters or 3...
each greek org's name stands for a phrase (in greek)... so a 2-lettered org's phrase has 2 words, and a 3-lettered org's phrase is made of 3 greek words. |

There is even a sorority at Cal-Berkeley with FOUR letters!

They use the lower case alpha because there was already KDPhi Fraternity. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

And don't forget about...
Acacia (who use AKAK as their letters) Triangle FarmHouse Ceres They have no Greek letters at all! |
While I am sure you're basically correct, I think that the 'alpha' has more signifigance than that.

also sometimes the motto is hidden other times it is open. For example, there is a Latina Sorority: Sigma Lambda Upsilon. On their website, http://www.sigmalambdaupsilon.org/ it would appear that the S.L.U. of their name stands for: Sincerity, Loyalty, Unity and also "Senoritas Latinas Unidas". I do not know whether they have a "secret" meaning for S.L.U. also. I was just citing this as one example (I'm not in this sorority, so this is just an observation on my part of having looked at the website). http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
Hey Asia!
I bet the alpha does have more significance than that too. But they did originally only go by KDPhi. When they discovered that the fraternity existed, the alpha was added. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif But we still just call them KDPhi on my campus. But we have KZPhi too. So it gets confusing if someone says the names too fast. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif PS If I remember correctly you're colonizing an Asian sorority at your school. So if you know more about all this, cool. What I know comes from their websites and the members that I know. So I hope it's correct. |
