I Wanted to Become a Member of XYZ Org For SOOO Long,

Now I'm a Member and I've Done?

Neos, what have you contributed to your chapter/organization since your initiation?

Have you all chaired any events? What programs have you worked on? Tell us about your experiences. :D

Good topic

Great topic, Soror!

I will be attending my first chapter meeting this Saturday and I plan on joining several committees for our chapter programs and serving as a mentor for our ON-TRACK program. I am looking forward to being able to get to WORK in the name of AKA!

I will update you guys after Saturday to include what committees I am on.

Shame on you AKA 2D 91! When I saw the title of the thread, I was sitting here yelling "thank you Jesus!" I thought, finally, yall had come to your senses and created a thread to guide us prospective members in seeking membership. You done got me all excited over nothin! :( :( :(

Even though I am 'technically' no longer a Neo...

I'll bite!!:D

For the third year in a row, I chaired a Greek Life/Measures of Our Success (MOOS) Halloween Social--Community Service Project on campus. This collaboration, started by our chapter (Sigma Gamma) five years ago, gives fourth and fifth grade Carmen-Buckner Elementary (named after an active golden soror in the Lambda Nu Omega chapter, by the way!) an opportunity to 'trick or treat' in the Greek Lounges on campus. The nine GLO's on campus host 'presentations' in their respective lounges--presentations could mean a 'haunted lounge' or any other Halloween related event, lasting around 30-45 minutes. After they've rotated all the lounges, they have dinner and story sharing. I've done it since my freshman year and it is truly rewarding.

Since most of these students (mostly minority--Latino and Black) come from lower middle class to lower class backgrounds, this is an opportunity to show them not only a small part of college life, but to enrich one day of their lives with fun, candy, games and food.

For my position in the chapter ;) I am responsible for springboarding and coordinating many of the programs for the chapter. Our chapter has three signature programs: Sister 2 Sister (monthly), AKAerobics (bimonthly) and the annual Date Auction (raises money for a specific foundation or charity--the last two years, the foundations were Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Lake County and MOOS). Our chapter is also collaborative in our grad chapter's Ivy Reading AKAdemy, Tax Freedom Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

After graduation, I plan on being just as active in my hometown graduate chapter!! ;)

Shamika T, as a neo, my advice to you as a prospective member is to guide yourself---to the library, to the Zeta's national website, or somewhere else besides GC! Obviously you have some type of brain b/c you are able to use a computer. So use it! Stop wasting my sorors, sistergreeks, and other sisterfriends' time!

Thank you! I know you will be a great asset when you transfer. You seem to have a great foundation to carry you on to higher heights.

BTW, why did you say "I'll bite"? What's the big deal? :D

Well since becoming a member in 2003 (Two years tomorrow:) ) I have been dubbed Miss AKA, or Super AKA or The (Thee) AKA by my chapter members. lol I was serious as an interest & I am serious about working for and loving MY AKA!
I'm on several committees as my chapter is very small. I am the fundraising chair and don't miss ANYTHING unless I am off of the island. I also seem to be obsessed with our colors. I have now turned a deaf ear to my chapter sorors who ask if I own any other colors. The answer is no. lol
I haven't missed any official AKA gathering i.e Regional, Boule, Leadership. I am wherever I am needed and help where I can.

I truly LOVE being an AKA. I love the relationships I've formed through her, I love doing the WORK of AKA, I love PLAYING in AKA. This truly was the best decision I could have made & I'm loving every moment of it.:D

Skeee- Wee My Sorors!

Thank you for that! I am looking forward to serving beyond the scope of undergrad. :D

And I wasn't trying to be funny, Soror Moderator...

ETA--I wasn't the first, but I couldn't get over the ludicrous-ness of Shamika T's post--->a stupid response to a serious question. Also, that there were so few replies to this topic. My apologies to Soror Unspokenone25 and congratulations! Don't it feel good!? :D

I have worked on several committes, including Habitat for Humanity and Poise-N-Ivy. I was also a member of our Relay for Life team. I was in the process of beginning work for the ABO-GNO, the foundation which was established through our chapter, as well as Ebony Fashion Fair and Boutillion. I attended my first Regionals in April and am still debating about the upcoming Regionals in Dallas. I have to see what's up with my summer employment/school schedule before I decide on Boule.

Ironically, I was heading to New Orleans for our first meeting after our summer hiatus the weekend that Katrina came through. Now, I am just chilling out and waiting for the chapter to get reestablished. I don't have much time for anything this school year, but intend to get more involved next year. I KNOW there will be PLENTY to do once the chapter gets back in effect.
