Source of Forged Niger-Iraq Uranium Documents Identified

ROME, Nov. 3 - Italy's spymaster identified an Italian occasional spy named Rocco Martino on Thursday as the disseminator of forged documents that described efforts by Iraq to buy uranium ore from Niger for a nuclear weapons program, three lawmakers said Thursday.

There had long been doubts within the United States intelligence community about the authenticity of the yellowcake documents, and references to it had been deleted from other presentations given at the time.

Senator Luigi Malabarba, who also attended Thursday's hearing, said in a telephone interview that General Pollari had told the committee that Mr. Martino was "offering the documents not on behalf of Sismi but on behalf of the French" and that Mr. Martino had told prosecutors in Rome that he was in the service of French intelligence.

A senior French intelligence official interviewed Wednesday in Paris declined to say whether Mr. Martino had been a paid agent of France.

It's been established that the major reason France and Russia opposed taking action against Saddam was because high govt. officials were collecting bribes and kickbacks from the UN/Iraq "Oil for Food" program.

Did I miss the connection to the "Oil For Food" program -- or did it just pop up out of nowhere?

You could have missed it.

The NYTimes and WAPost, and recently Volcker's report to the UN, have been publicizing this.

And the connection to uranium and Niger with a UN scandal? I suppose if you dig deep enough.

You might hit the fact that it wasn't only French, German and Russian compaines taking kick-backs but also American and British companies?

The way I still see it is that the White House made the intelligence fit the policy - not basing policy off intelligence; and Il Shumko seemed to fit the bill of 'intel' that supported the march to war no matter how cooked it seemed.

The Duefler report pre or post sanitization - cause I know that after editting it only listed companies from nations that opposed the war, but a full list was sent to congress (and of course leaked) -or- the report from the Permant Subcommitte on Investigations that lists all the countries and companies involved?

The first is damning of people and companies in Russia, Germany, France, Canada, and even the Vatican.

While the second makes note of the fact that US & UK companies accounted for more than 50% of the oil voucher kickbacks - (including Bayoil, Exxon, , ChevronTexaco Corp).

I'll take that as a compliment coming from the master of evasive debate ;)

Again it all seems to depend on what reports you look at - is it really France and Russia profiting if the US accounts for more that half the illegally purchased oil? Every western nation basically had someone or corporation in on the take - it's just that lately "some" folks have been using/mainpulating facts to fit or back-up policy (sound familiar?).

The more you look into it the more hyporcritical those outraged the most sound - simply because they are using half-truths to make political attacks on opponents or critics.

Sure Wikipedia has got some good information on it - but that's info subject to contributions and editors... so it has to be approached with caution - but it does have some good links to primary sources:

In the end I gotta wonder how much of the vitrol coming almost exclusively from the right in the US is genuine outrage at the scandal - and how much is in keeping with the anti-UN policy of the far-right and neo-cons? Regardless it doesn't really seem to make much sense for the right to be pointing fingers at nations that opposed Bush's war - simply because the supporting nation's hands are just as bloody when it comes down to it. But then again why should anything be different now? There are greedy corportations and politicos always willing to make a buck no matter what the human cost - they should all be prosecuted, not just the ones that ideological opponents...

The problem is I don't think were are going to really know for years, after enough time has passed for serious scholarly research into the whole bag of sh*t that the Oil for Food scandal is...
