Muslim Fans Say They Were Profiled At NFL Game

NEWARK, N.J. -- Several Muslim football fans claim they were profiled and unfairly detained by stadium security personnel and the FBI at Giants Stadium during a game in September.

But the FBI said it was where they were, not what they were doing that led to the questioning of the five fans.

FBI spokesman Steven Segal told The Associated Press the five were congregating near the main air intake duct during the Giants-Saints game.

The fans were removed from their seats and questioned after other fans saw them prostrating themselves on the ground as part of daily Muslim prayers, which must be performed five times each day.

Former President George H.W. Bush was among the 80,000 fans on hand that night as part of a fundraising campaign he and former President Bill Clinton were leading for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

One of the Muslims, along with his lawyer, said the five were unfairly profiled and detained because they had been praying as their faith requires.

One of the men, who asked not to be identified because he fears harassment from the incident, said he and the others had no idea they were near an air intake.

The Muslims were detained about half an hour before they were told they would be given upgraded seats. They chose to leave.

This is kind of hard. While the profiling sucks and is unfortunate, I think if I was near these guys I might get kind of spooked too. While the FBI should brush up on their facts, these men need to realize that it's not everyday that you see Muslims praying in the middle of a giant (no pun intended) stadium full of people. How were the offiicals supposed to know that the men didn't know they were standing near air ducts? What if they had just pulled off some sort of attack with the air ducts and were praying before becoming "martyrs"?

I've read two articles here in NY and neither said they were offered "upgraded" seats. They both said they were told they could go back, but "couldn't" sit in the same seats. Seems to me the NY papers would have noted the "upgrade" part.

At any rate, I think this is ridiculous. If it were a group of white guys - or even black guys - standing "around the air intake ducts" no one would have thought twice. Not even if they were prostrating on the ground. And this is NY, I've seen street vendors praying on the sidewalk - it's not so shocking or weird to people here.

I also understand it's a different world now and we do need to take precautions, but I think this was just over the top. :rolleyes:

Why aren't they going around arresting all the other fans who were standing near all the air ducts? They "could've" pulled off an attack as well? It's not enough probable cause, hon.

Well if it was some middle easterners walking around, you could say it's racial profiling.

If it's some middle easterners hovering around an air induct tank, it's behavior profiling as well.

Bombings in Bali and New Dehli would have been muslims (fucked-up ones yes) but not 'middle eastern' - but south east asian...

perhaps you should go back and look at my post - I did list some objections to your pathetically blanket blaming/labeling...

I mean seriously by your logic all German/Christians should be suspect when they are near someone Jewish or something Jewish owned - or European/Christians should be detained in case they get the urge to burn/rape/cannibalize any Muslims - or WASP Americans need to be carefully watched in case they might slaughter native Americans in the name of their 'God'/Menifest Destiny - or again WASP Americans should be watched for signs of imminent slave trading - all Canadians/British should be watched in case they plan on burning Washington again.

Was there a mass hysteria after OK? Were people denied their civil and legal rights because they matched a the broad description of White Christians?

I thought that the law was supposed to protect a persons right to practice their faith, and to protect them from illegal search and seizure - or did Heir Ashcroft abolish that too?

Guys praying at my alma mater... no reaction, seeing as though there's a reflection room for just that in the University Center. Also during their holidays they pray with megaphones outside.

Guys praying in a crowded stadium.... yeah I'm going to be weary.


Just out of curiosity and not to start a flame, because I am very curious about this. African Americans- do you get weary when you see a bald white man dressed in all black? (not talking about dress suits)

I've learned something new today, Indonesia and India is located in the Middle East and they're both Arab countries.

Actually, they were all British citizens.
