Iron Supplements

I'm sure a few out there have been on iron supplements before.

I'm on Feosol right now due to an upcoming surgery. I've only taken 3 of them so far (take one with lunch, one with dinner... I'm on my 2nd day). My eyes have been burning when I try to focus on reading the computer screen, I feel insanely tired and lethargic, and just kinda weird altogether. Could these be side effects? I looked at the website and I don't have any of the side effects it mentions, just these.

Has anyone ever had weird side effects to iron pills?

I get cramps in my lower back (kidney area) when I take iron suppliments.

I have to take iron supplimnets when I travel to higher altitudes, which fortunately, is very infrequently.

How big of a dosage are the ones you're taking? That might have something to do with it.

I was anemic off and on from about 13-27. When I first was diagnosed, I couldn't swallow pills, so they gave me LIQUID IRON. There aren't words in the English language to describe how nasty this tasted. I learned to choke down a pill in a hurry.

I didn't find anything on FirstConsult! that seemed to reference taking Iron and the symptoms you mentioned.

All of the side effects related to iron supplements are gastrointestinal in nature. Usually lethargy is a presentation of anemia...not a problem associated with the cure.

Likewise EMedicine didn't return anything of use for lethargy and eye pain, unless you were under some sort of biological warfare attack that you're not telling us.

Sorry not to be of more help.

the lethargy is probably the result of anemia-which is probably why you are taking the iron supplements. i took iron supplements during both of my pregnancies due to anemia, and the only side effect i can remember is a metallic taste in my mouth.yuck!!

contact your doctor's office to see if what you are experiencing is drug related or stem from something else.

best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I'm with you on the liquid form. I have problems swallowing pills so a few years ago when I had mono the first time, I couldn't swallow the pills cuz they weight down on ur tongue.... they gave me the liquid. I did it as a shot chased with orange juice. NASTY.

I'm on the iron pill because of the surgery that I'll be having, not from anemia. Although the tiredness could be that every year around this time I got mono again (blood test proved) and I thought that not participating in rush this year I wouldn't get it again. I'm goin in tomorrow because I feel my bronchitis is coming on again, and getting other bloodwork so maybe that'll tell me what's up. I just hate this feeling of not wanting to do anything but sit on the couch!
