The Confederat Flage: Protest @ LSU among Af Am Students
http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/...otest001.shtml
Does the Confederate Flag have any affect on you? Are you offended by it regardless of the colors? The students against the purple and gold flag wanted football players (AF Am) to boycott the game, they did not. Are these players, in your opinion "wrong" for playing in the game anyway? |
My experience with the flag:
I'm originally from NY, but grew up in SC. When I was in 2nd grade our predominately AA school held a sort of "Fair". In the gym there were clowns, popcorn, cotton candy, and they were handing out these cute flags. To us - they were simply cool because we all watched the popular "Dukes of Hazzard" and just thought it was the "picture" on the side of "General Lee" (Bo & Luke Duke's car). When we got back to our classes - our teachers - many of whom were AA were highly upset and promptly collected all of the flags and had to explain to a classroom of upset children why. That was my first experience with the Confederate Flag and the fact that people still honor this flag is still as shocking now as it was then. I don't care what people say - history, soldiers dying to protect a certain way of life - yadda, yadda, yadda. There's nothing noble about the Confederacy or it's flag. I really don't care if some are offended - I'm not reminded of sweet summers sitting on a porch sipping lemonade or a simpler life when I see that flag. I'm reminded of "strange fruit" that grew on trees, whips, oppression, slavery, KKK, racism. So - yes, the AF AM football players should have refused to play (IMO). And yes, the flag is offensive - no matter what the colors are. |
