How much money . . .

do you think one needs to donate to:

(1) Get a building name after yourself
(2) Get an honorary Phd
(3) make sure that your children is guaranteed admission to the university
(4) to have a professorship name afer you.

(1) $15-25 M
(2) I don't think you have to - you could just be a socially/politically relevant figure.
(3) See #1.
(4) $1-5M.

All sorta depends - if you hit a school in need you can be a real hero for them...

(1) I have seen it go for as low as $3Mil
(2) It depends - you pay for a departmental library to be built, and you've generally got a good shot.
(3) Don't know
(4) Last one here at UofT went for about $1Mil

Some schools have endowed Professor positions; Harvard Medical School is one I can think of, and I know there are others.

I think it all varies based on the school; it will probably cost more at a well-known school, while a (comparably) smaller donation at a smaller school could get you something pretty significant.

For some reason it bothers me that most of our new buildings on campus are named after people who donated a ton of money. Instead of named after people who have had an important impact on the school (ie, professors, presidents, etc). But I guess that's a whole different thread.
