New Orleans Police Beating; Victim Was Sober

I am surprised no one has mentioned this at all. I learned of it Sunday evening and shook my head but the more I hear about this story, the more disgusted I become.

Entire story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051011/..._taped_beating

Robert Davis said he had returned to New Orleans to check on property his family owns in the storm-ravaged city, and was out looking to buy cigarettes when he was beaten and arrested Saturday night in the French Quarter.

Police have alleged that the 64-year-old Davis was publicly intoxicated, a charge he strongly denied as he stood on the street corner where the incident played out Saturday.

"I haven't had a drink in 25 years," Davis said. He had stitches beneath his left eye, a bandage on his left hand and complained of soreness in his back and aches in his left shoulder.

A federal civil rights investigation was begun in the case. Davis is black; the three city police officers seen on the tape are white.

But Davis, his attorney and police spokesman Marlon Defillo all said they do not believe race was an issue.

"He does not see it as a racial thing," said Davis' lawyer, Joseph Bruno.

 I can't believe this. I just saw the footage on the news this morning. This makes me so angry. They had 10 people looting in a time of crisis so they think they can use it as an excuse to beat every black man they see. They'll get their just desserts.

CT4, I've heard about this but haven't seen the tape yet.

I caught it this morning and last night but got pissed off and had to change the channel. I am sure it is online to catch it now.

ETA: Here is a better article with video footage courtesy of CNN.com

I saw it a couple of days ago. Yesterday, there was a "beating aftermathy" video on CNN, but I can't find it to show the link. It was very graphic - there was blood everywhere esp as he was trying to sit up. Can we say - PAID.

I didn't like the part where old po-po was mounted on the horse trying to block the cameras view of the beating.

It's only going to get worse. That's why it's time.to.go.

ETA: This isn't unusual. This time, they were caught.

You know, I believe that. There was a situation, last year, I think, were a college student from GA was killed in a choke hold on Bourbon Street. Yep, he was Black.

Yes! Did you hear the big policeman say to the cameraman "We've been here for 6 days trying to save our F*&%$#@ lives and you come here trying to ruin..." (I couldn't understand the rest).

Just because they're frustrated does not mean use a darn near senior citizen as a punching bag.

AKA2D '91 10-12-2005 08:06 AM

He said, "to ruin our F-n city". We had captions displayed on the news.
