Hazing?

Okay. So, I'm not an alumna advisor for my collegiate chapter, nor do I have much to do with them for personal reasons about things that have happened in the past. But, I have a dilemma at this point and I'm not sure what I should do.

Some other alums and I all keep in touch and some of those alums are alum advisors. I have heard from a couple of them that the collegiate chapter has now put a weight limit on what the new members can weigh. I don't know if this goes towards the initiated members, but I do know that it applies to pnm's and new members. I know that the person over the advisors *don't know what her position is* won't do anything about it. She didn't handle other problems that arose within the last 2 years. I'm not sure if I should report this to higher ups, and if I do I'm not sure who to report it to.

The university has STRICT rules on hazing, especially schools in this state after the deaths and problems last year in greek orgs. I know that if the university finds out, that the chapter will be in serious trouble. This chapter has some serious issues that have been brewing and are finally coming to a head, again. I love my chapter and I love AOII with all my heart, but I feel that these girls have definately LOST the meaning of what AOII is. I want to say something, but I don't know if it is my place to say anything. Can any of you wonderful ladies give me some advice on what to do?

crashing the board here....

i wouldn't say that is really hazing just by having a weight limit, but i think you got it right by saying that weight has nothing to do with what AOII is about. i think you should say something. doesn't seem the advisor has a clue. is there a regional person you could talk to? maybe the advisor just needs to go if she is not dealing with other problems in the chapter.

it seems the chapter is/has lost it's focus of what the values and guiding principles of AOII are. you might be able to talk to a few of the chapters members and ask about this "crazy thing you heard and surely it can't be true b/c that is nowhere in our membership selection manual."

now, if they are marking people like the infamous lifetime tv movie, then yes. if they are being verbally abusive towards women who are overweight, yes.

are they inviting women into the chapter who are over the limit, then telling them to lose weight? or are they not giving bids to women who are over the set limit? are current members viewed as heavy and they don't to ruin their rep? sounds very odd to me, but maybe it's a competitive school and they are getting a bad rap for having overweight members.

This is not only hazing, it's encouraging women to maintain a potentially unhealthy lifestyle. The risk management implications are deep. There are obviously deeper problems in this chapter, if this is the end result.

I would confirm this rumor, first, then bring it to the attention of whatever regional or national officers work with this chapter.

I agree wholeheartedly with Barbara. Confirm first, then act appropriately. Sometimes rumor is just that.

S, check your PM box.

Thanks y'all. My lid'l is supposed to call me tonight, and I'll figure out a way to ask her then what is going on. Then I will proceed from there.
