Structure for Alumnae Orgs
 

Hello fellow Greeks!

I have a question about alum associations. How do most orgs. have them set up? Are they strictly structured with officers? Dues? Things like that.
I was part of a local that never had a structured alumnae association so some of us now want to have an association but we don't really know how to set it up. I would like to be able to give my sisters some suggestions on what we do next.

Alpha Gamma Delta uses a combination of Area Names and Chapter names to designate their alum groups. You can find the list here.

Dues are $30 for the year for sisters living on the island of Oahu. For sisters living on the Neighbor Islands, the mainland, or internationally, associate dues are $15 and they are also included on our Fall and Spring newsletter mailing lists.

Alum groups that have a collegiate chapter nearby are called chapters. Groups that don't have a collegiate chapter nearby are called clubs.

The offices of the alum chapter are as follows:
President
Vice President
Recording Secretary
Permanent Secretary
Editor
Junior Circle Chairman (Junior Circle is a special alum group for sisters 35 years and younger)
International Reunion Day Chair
Recruitment Information Chair
Honors of Epsilon Pi Chairman (the honors are given at Convention)
Panhellenic Delegate
Philanthropy Chairman.

Ours are also named after the area that they are in (mine is the Puget Sound Alumnae Chapter) and we have two different types of groups.

Crescent Circles which are smaller, only have a chairwoman and have fewer requirements.

Alumnae Chapter which have full Exec Boards and more requirements.

Delta Gamma also has various levels of alumnae groups: hope groups, associations, and chapters. All are identified by geographic area.

Alumnae chapters have an officer structure similar to that of collegiate chapters:
president, vice president: membership, vice president: programming, treasurer, corresponding secretary, recording secretary, Panhellenic delegate. There may also be chairs for Foundation (philanthropy events), collumnae (activities with nearby collegiate chapters), and special interest groups: young alumnae, book club, dinner club, "mom and me", bunko, bridge groups etc.

This is very helpful! Thanks guys! Anybody else got anything? What kind of activities and things do alum groups do? Philanthropies they work with, etc.

Alumnae associations can basically do whatever their members want. Service projects can be one-time or annual or ongoing. My alumnae club decorates holiday trees at the Children's Hospital. We also work with third graders with reading skills (at an area school that is mainly low-income). That is one of Pi Phi's service focuses. We'll also do a Read Across America project.

We have 4-5 meetings/ year with speakers. The topics vary but have included cooking, nutrition, home/personal safety, arts/ theater. A lot will depend upon your budget and interests of your members. Previous clubs have gone to theater productions together, had a 'couples' night at the racetrack and baseball game.

Keeping interest ongoing in an alumnae club requires creativity and variety. It isn't like your 4 years undergrad experience where it was okay to have the same events every year. Yes, people are interested in helping the collegiates but there has to be some other reason to keep coming.
