Meeting AOIIs Unexpectedly
Does anyone have any stories about meeting AOIIs at times or places where you least expected it?
One of my closest friends is an AOII from Theta (DePauw) in Indiana and I am an Iota (Illinois). We live in Tulsa, OK. Today our first grade sons had no school because the teachers were at a retreat. Parents were invited to bring the kids to pray for the teachers (Catholic school). So, neither of us really ever wears letters because we have been out of school for 13 years (but of course we look like we just graduated.) But, emporium had a good sale and I happened to wear an AOII t-shirt today. So, the kindergarten teacher, who our boys had all last year, sees my shirt, and asks if I am an AOII and my friend says that we both are and the teacher informs us that she is an AOII too! So, we have seen her everyday for over a year and it never came up! It was just so funny because there aren't too many of us around here. |
I have a story like that...
I moved to Savannah about 10 years ago, and my first job was teaching music at a Catholic school. In my 4th grade class, I had this AMAZING student. Incredibly bright, sweet, and one of those girls that you just know is going to grow up to do something brilliant, the kind that I looked at and said, wow, I hope I have a daughter like that someday. Several months after I started teaching, I started pursuing forming an alumnae chapter in Savannah and looked at my list of alumnae--and her mother was on the list!!! I called her and we chatted on the phone for probably an hour! She was the first AOII I met here, and let me tell you, it didn't take me long to figure out why her daughter was so brilliant, she was too! |
I have two actually.
One was a couple of years ago during vacation at my summer retail job. I worked in the children's department. Anyway - this lady and her adorable daughter cameup to purchase some clothes at the counter and the mom paid with her AOII credit card. I said, "Oh wow, you're an AOII? I am too! From Rhodes." Unfortunately, she looked at me like I was nuts or something. The second one was just recently. I had the unfortunate experience of changing jobs and the job I got hired into not working out because of my lack of litigation experience (I am a legal assistant). Well, I applied for a job through careerbuilder.com and got contacted by a lady through a personnel company. She had looked at my resume and saw that I was an AOII and said she was one at University of Alabama. She was very friendly and I finally got to meet her in person. (Oh - and I am not unemployed anymore - I will start my new job on Tuesday. Just in case you were wondering.) |
SilverMom and I went to a very nice Italian restaurant, and SilverMom had on her badge. She went to the restroom to wash her hands. As she was leaving a woman walked through the restroom door, grabbed her hand, and gave her a handshake. SilverMom suddenly realized that she had just met an AOII!
Happiness! :) Beryana and I have a very neat picture of all of the AOII's that attended SilverMom's DAR chapter luncheon two years ago. Beryana was the youngest and a woman from Nu Omicron who was intitiated in 1931 was the oldest! Neat, huh???? PSS-Beryana, it won't be long until I am will be 2 years older than you! (Le sigh! I feel old!) :( I need a day at the spa to handle this birthday or, at minimum, a massage and one of those awesome AOII birthday charms that just came out from Emporium. Have any of you seen those new AOII Birthday charms? Silver |

PS--you aren't old at all, so shush :) |
Don't talk about age!
And if you do, count your age by friends, not years! Where's the birthday charm??? |
One time at the mall I was driving in the parking lot and a huge SUV from North Caroline (I live in Atlanta) almost t-boned me... and then we both just laughed because we both had AOII liscence plates. haha. random, but yeah.

My grand lid'l is a taking a lid'l this year, so before I began teaching figure skating club Sunday afternoon I began cutting out the letters for a shirt I was making her to give to her lid'l. A lady that I've known since childhood *I used to figure skate with her daughter, who I now teach with* came to bring her own daughter something that she needed. She saw what I was doing and asked about it. I told her I was cutting letters for my sorority sister for a shirt. She asked what letters and I told her AOII and she just got this look on her face and pulled out her lavaliere! :) I had no idea she was an AOII after all this time! :)

There was an AOII on my plane from Washington DC to New Orleans a few years ago. We sat across from each other and she was talking to her daughter about the different sororities available on her daughter's new campus. I was eavesdropping and highly recommended AOII. Her mother was so happy because she was trying not to "push" AOII on her daughter...I never found out if the daughter joined or not, but it was a great plane ride--lots to talk about.

I'm a real estate appraiser. I was at this house on Saturday. It came up in my conversation with the homeowner that I had a daughter named Stella. The woman said her dogs name was Stella and her daughters name was Elizabeth. I put 2 and 2 together asked her if she was in a sorority and she said yes I'm an AOII. I think I even got her to join our alum chapter :)
Small world...I love this sorority! |
Well, I checked my myspace page on day, and found this message titled "a sister". It turns out a sister from my area saw my profile and sent me a message! We met in person this past Fri night!! She is awesome, and turns out....She is from MY CHAPTER! A few years after me, but still! It was so great to meet w/ her! I need to tell her about GC so she can come meet up w/ more sisters!

Just wanted to post this. My neighbor and I have always been friendly, saying hi and how are you...but we never really stopped to chat to talk about anything. Well, one day a couple of weeks ago I was asking her how her law school finals went and we started talking about sororities some how...turns out she was an AOII at Vanderbilt! She was also her student body president at Vanderbilt! I'm going to give her a tour of the Nu Beta chapter house in January! Fun times!

Most recent experience:
At High Tea in Vancouver this September (2005), Leslie (one of my pledge sisters) and June, an alum from the 50s, realized that they were both AOIIs and had known each other through summer cabins for YEARS! Second experience: Whilst in Coffs Harbour, Australia, I was trying to explain to some Scots and an Irish bloke what the "Great Panda Caper" was. [This was the year the DKEs stole every AOII Panda they could find, including removing a three foot high one during a party!!] One of the women who was with us that night approached me the next day. Lo and behold, in sunny Coffs Harbour were two AOIIs. She was a former CP from near Philadelphia and when we got down to Sydney, we went out to see an opera together at the Sydney Opera House. Nice close to an interesting trip, eh! Roses :D |
