Jet Blue airplane to crash land soon?
LONG BEACH, Calif. - A Jet Blue airliner unsuccessfully attempted to make an emergency landing Wednesday after its front wheels were turned sideways and unable to retract into the plane after takeoff from a nearby airport.
ADVERTISEMENT The plane carrying 139 passengers left Burbank Airport at 3:17 p.m. for New York's JFK airport, said Jet Blue spokesman Bryan Baldwin. Jet Blue flight 292 was circling the Long Beach Airport, about 30 miles south of Burbank, as the pilot and aviation officials tried to determine what the best solution was. The Airbus A320 was dumping fuel over the Pacific, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Donn Walker. TV images showed the nose wheel turned perpendicular. Its back landing gear was also down but appeared to be in the correct position. "After leaving Burbank, pilots reported a landing gear indication light on, meaning there may be a problem or issue with the landing gear," Baldwin said. The crew then decided to return to an airport to attempt to land, he said. The pilots were "able to determine the problem with assistance from air traffic control." Walker said dumping fuel would help the plane land. "They can't be that heavy," Walker said. No other details were immediately available. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050921/...iner_emergency |
Our local news station has spent its entire broadcast watching this plane circle around.
Not that I'm saying it's not important, but cut back to it later or something. |
I'm watching this now on CNN. They're talking about landing the plane at LAX soon. Hope they get down safely.

Here is a pic of the broken landing gear.
http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2005/US/09/21....gear.kcal.jpg I am praying for them. I would hate to be on that flight. |
Holy crap, that landing must have been scary! I think I had to catch my breath once I saw the tire catch on fire for a bit.
Glad it got down safely. |
It landed safely. A lot of sparks but they are ok.
:) |
Impressive landing. Glad they're down ok.

That landing was what my pilot father and grandfather would have simply called "Some Damn fine piloting".

I think I would have died of panic if I were on that plane. I believe they said it was 2 1/2 hours that it continued to circle while it used up more fuel.
|
Ditto! Now everyone on that plane needs to buy the crew a drink (or 2)

I saw that on the local news stations out here.
All I got to say is that pilot better be getting a raise. |
I think everyone on that plane needs several drinks. One of the passengers said that because there are television screens in the plane, the passengers watched the whole landing on the news. That would scare the living daylights out of me.

The landing gear performed as advertised - the tires and rims disintegrated in a shower of sparks as they dragged on the runway, since they're made of a magnesium alloy. Long landing; the captain kept the nose up as long as possible after touchdown to slow it down before setting it down on the busted nose gear. |
Emergency landing televised on JetBlue flight
Theres a link to a video which one of the passengers took in the cabin. I dont know if this is true but someone on one of the LA Tv stations that was brought on as an "expert" said that the pilots probably wouldnt get paid for that flight since it never reached its final destination. I would certainly hope thats not the case but I am not familiar with airline policies... |
