business vs. social club
 

I think that is the biggest struggle in my chapter, are we a business or a social club... the answer is obviously a little of both, but how do we do that... i mean, some are wrapped so much on one side that its hard to find the middle... what can I do personally to fix that. I am at the point that screw bailing out, even though OH HOW MUCH I WANT TO, but it needs to be fix. So, what actions can i take to do so

In delta nu we have a good mixture of social/ business. It seems that we have 1/2 brothers who like to party and the 1/2 are on student government. I mean, our IFC rep supported to get rid of mixers during the week. This made the business 1/2 happy b/c grades are important while the other 1/2 was upset. My recomendation is to try to balance out social and business. You don't want to just focus on your grades in college, but you shouldn't party all the time either.

Undergrad greeks need to remember, that they are at college for an education. Beta, and greek life in general, should come second to your academics. When you have your homework, papers, tests..etc. done for the day/week, party on. When you have stuff to do, get it done before letting loose.

Same goes for the chapter. When there is business to be done, get it done. Socialize after.

yeah, but then everyone is absolutely hating the experience if its all business, and there is so much business that itll always be all business. There has to be a way to balance

I understand your point, but the business side of Beta is no 40 hour a week job. If one cannot get the business side of Beta done and not have left over time for academics/personal life/social/job...etc., then they need to go to a Time Management seminar.

One thing that I do somewhat disagree with the general direction Beta is going is the fact that they stress academics more than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, they are important, but in reality grades only count as so much. What you learn on the social side of the fraternity is just as important as having decent grades. Good grades and a lack of personality is not going to get you anywhere.

If you look at those that are successful..most of them didn't have the greatest grades in college but they did learn a lot of stuff that allowed them to get where they are today.

A fraternity is a bit of both. Work hard and play hard.

I really can't come up with an answer tailored to your situtation...but one thing that can always improve a chapter is the type of men you recruit. I believe you are the recruitment chair and the power really is in your hands as to how the future of the chapter pans out.
