Lindsay McQueen Sigma Chapter Western Illinois University |
Great to see all the enthusiasm! Welcome to all the new MCs!
For those chapters with large new MC classes -- let's hear some of your plans for integrating them into your chapter smoothly. Always something to thing about and I'm sure there are some excellent plans and processes other chapters would love to hear. |
Fabulous news and additions for Beta and Sigma! :)
My chapter is having rush this week and I can't wait to hear the results! Cross your fingers for Gamma! :) |
Just curious...how many of your chapters treat Sigma Alpha as more of a club and not mainly a sorority? When we had our nationals visit, I was surprised to find out how much different the beta chapter is.
Also, how do you all recruit so many girls? We send out flyers to all of the girls in agriculture and have a few respond. I'm very interested in how you go about getting so many MCs. |
One thing to keep in mind id that Beta is part of the Greek system at Purdue...correct?
Last time I knew only three chapters nationwide were part of thei schools greek system. As for rush....We send home letter to all freshman and Sophomores in the summer. Our Associate Dean forwards a simular formal letter once at school (but to all females in the College of Ag & Nat Res) We chalk the walk, put up the sandwich boards, talk in classes (100 & 200 levels that have Ag majors in them) with an overhead about Sigma Alpha and invite girls out to the info sessions, have a mixer with AGR, dorm storm to hang up fliers, but them in ALL of the ag buildings, wear Sigma Alpha shirts like no other. I'm sure if your president or rush chair talks with your chapter contact on national borad they can help you figure out a solid plan for next semesters rush :) |
We are a part of our Greek system at Purdue. As for Rush, we have had an awesome Rush Chair these past two semesters, however since we are involved with the Panhellenic Board, we are not allowed to publicize our Rush until after Formal Rush is over with. It is a small window of time for us to flyer and get the word out (about a week or week and a half).
I also believe that it could have something to do with how large our greek system is too. Purdue has the third largest Greek system in the United States. With so many options, we tend to be a smaller house than many of the social sororities on our campus. Thanks for the ideas! We will definitely take them into consideration. |
Because you are one of the few greek chapters I would really work with your national contct on this situation. Hopefully you have had a recent chapter visit and this could be the focus of one of your sessions. Successful rush is vital to the survival of a chapter without new members there will cease to be an active chapter after a few years.
Best of luck! :) |
Sorry if I sounded differently...we haven't had a problem with Rush. We have about 30 actives and haven't had a problem with getting people. I was just curious how you all get more. We actually had around 11 girls stop by during Rush, but we can't allow first semester freshman to become MCs because they don't have a collegiate gpa.

At UF, we send letters out during the summer and this year we tried something new by sending emails out to the girls in the College of Ag which generated a big response. We had 2 info sessions and then started rush week. Also, when incoming freshman come to visit the campus on tours, for orientation, and events we try to set up a table to talk to those interested. The emails seemed to be a big success though.
