Navy Pilots "Counseled," Not "Punished"
Some U. S. Navy pilots have been "counseled" after they rescued citizens stranded by Katrina. The news story points out that they have NOT been punished or reprimanded. One apparently has been assigned to duty involving dog kennels, but it's not punishment. I guess animals need a pilot's care?
The news story does include a quote from a U. S. Navy commander pointing out that although everybody might want to be involved in rescuing people, "that is not the priority." Perhaps an unfortunate slip of the tongue, and really it looks like it may have applied just to specific missions. I believe we've all seen plenty of heroic rescue efforts by U.S. armed forces personnel in this disaster. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/d/9246651/ |
What they probably got was a letter of counseling that may or may not become part of an officer's personnel file. An Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), on the other hand can be the kiss of death for an officer's future promotion chances.
