Sorors, what do you think about this?

I saw this on Greek Peeps and I was wondering what you thought about t-shirts like these:

Soror to ANSWER your question  it I think the shirts are vurry cute and made me smile. Although we have reasons why we rep the colors we do and understand the meaning behind them, they are just colors. It's not like once you become a member of an org you only wear their colors and stop wearing anything else. So just because they wear those shirts I don't find it any different from me rocking my fly red suit thinking I am the shizznit right now and my silver AKA keychain is peeking out of my bag. ;)

Thank you Soror for answering the question...I apologize that this topic has already been discussed, I guess I didn't do enough research. This was my very first thread:( . I def. was not trying to cause a problem...:)

Soror lj, I think my response was misinterpreted as being "smart" (???). Sorry - I wasn't trying to be. I just wanted to show you where someone had already started a thread on this topic & it was closed.

Much luv,

I'm just going to be real about it...I'm just not feeling this shirt. I'm sorry. I'm all for Greek unity and all that jazz, but I would NOT EVA purchase or wear that shirt. It wouldn't make a difference if it was red & white, blue & white or blue & gold.

IntegriTY1908 09-06-2005 01:20 AM

WHAT!

I agree with prayerfull i would NEVER wear that !

Well....Well......Well!! It is true that once you become a part of an organization you do not need to limit yourself to just one color. It is also true that Most AKA'S look good in any color that we wear. BUT as a proud member of the first and finest I will have to DISAGREE with ANY post that says "they are just colors" NO...NO....NO.... not to me and the rest of the members of this illustrious organization who KNOW the true meaning behind why we are sooooo pretty in salmon pink and apple green those colors represent so much more than "just colors" they are a piece of a legacy that is so great that the mere mention of her name turns heads! The point is Be Fly in whatever color you choose I know its tempting to wear mine....... but be respectful to your own organization! Know your hisory so that you may properly respect your roots! If you dont know get with someone who is ready and willing to RE-EDUCATE you because this is not a game or a joke I thought I told YOU "THIS IS A SERRRRRIOUS MATTER"

nachural 09-06-2005 01:29 PM

Soror Integrity I dont know if you were coming at me or what but I do understand the beautiful meaning behind our colors so much so in fact that I wear them more than 4 days a week. My ls's call me super neo.

The only reason colors have meaning is because we give it to them (well our founders did) - but to me they are just colors in the end and they were in the begining. Just because I feel this way doesn't mean I dont know my history. Colors are not like things that had characteristics before they became associated with AKA and based on those characteristics our founders chose them. We give colors meaning but we cannot give the ivy meaning- the ivy already was what it was.

I understand how you feel because I see that there is a fine line between the shirts being disrespectful and how I percieved them as being cute. If they think they look good in any color more power to them because I feel the same way and that's why it made me smile.

No, I don't think you were being "smart" Soror, you were just pointing out something that I overlooked and that is perfectly fine. We help eachother...:) I just didn't want to cause any problems...:D

It's one thing to wear other colors, it's another thing to purposefully wear another org's colors with your org's letters on them. I feel it is disrespectful to BOTH orgs.

When those shirts first came out years ago, they were the rage. But then most of our orgs put a protocol prohibition on them.

In any case, I would be also concerned about "AKA's". Even on a pink and green shirt, that would not be acceptable.

Paradise359 09-06-2005 09:42 PM

I agree. Not feeling them. I can wear "any color" without my Sorority's name on it. That's fine. But I'm not about to put my letters in somebody else's colors. Tacky. Salmon Pink & Apple green mean something to Alpha Kappa Alpha as Crimson & Cream mean something to Delta Sigma Theta. So while in respect to the true meaning of life they are just colors, at this time, in regards to my organization, they represent so much more.

MsFoxyLoxy77 09-06-2005 10:09 PM

Even if you truly look good in any color it's just tacky to purposefully put this on a t-shirt with other colors and especially other orgs official colors. IMHO it cheapens the value you place on your organization. I was taught that anytime you put A K A letters on you better be authentic: your best self, carrying yourself with AKAtude, and looking especially fierce (though we always do). When you were the wrong colors you are not being authentic PERIOD those colors don't represent AKA.

Post Script
Plus it just has that "something ain't right" look about it. I guess the American Flag should be yellow, gray, and purple..I mean we'll still have those thirteen stripes and 50 odd stars right?
