Question about DG??? good or bad

Many message boards that I pass that have opinion about sororities on them state that DG's are great or up near the top. At my school and a few surrounding ones, DG only has less than 65 members, while most sororities have 150. I don't know hardly any of these girls, and I'm sure they are sweet, but they are also classified as "having a few extra pounds." I just wanted to know what you guys thought about DG's at your school.

Each chapter from campus to campus you will find something different and unique about them. And each has thier own opinion on the chapters.

An opinion to join a sisterhood shouldn't be based on campus opinion but your own opinon.

As far as the DG's on my campus... The women were light hearted and friendly. But that is just from personal experience - not campus rumors..

Forgive my ignorance, but can someone tell me what a DG is? Forgive me again if it's not for me to know. :-)

At Rutgers they are one of the larger sororities as well. Unfortunately, they don't differ from the other houses when it comes to problems. Meaning, the bigger sororities have the "click" problem. I guess this is also a normal problem that arises for every organization; not everyone can get along and be friends all the time. Personally, I think they are one of the more respected sororities at our school. If you're question is are they fat here, no they aren't.

I'm a DG at the University of Oklahoma and our chapter has approximately 150 members. The sorority's rep basically just depends on the campus you are referring to, and the girls in it at the particular time. At my school we're one of the top houses and we're known for how individualistic we are. No I don't think we're known as the "fat" sorority, but I guess it depends on who you're comparing us to. If you compare us to a box of toothpicks, then we might be slightly overweight, otherwise, we're a collection of average girls on campus wanting to be involved and share in sisterhood. Best of luck if you decide to rush, RedandBlack.

You guys have been talking about the less popular house on your campus being called the "fat house." I know this goes on but consider the other side. On my campus the top sororities also get unfairly labeled as the anorexic house. All of this points to superficiality which is inherent in the Greek system and especially NPC rush and this is unlikely to change. None of this is healthy for the psychology of the young women involved or the strength of the greek system as a whole. Also, I think these fat house/skinny house things tend to be overgeneralizations based on one or two people. Can we discuss general strength of chapters without resorting to this crap.

geez..sorry i even brought it up...i just wanted to know what other dg's were like... i know they are different everywhere and i know that houses should not be judged on such superficial things as that....okay, but then you look at me, the rushee, and let me turn it around on you flipside....if i show up at rush wearing clothes from walmart and have on no makeup and live in a trailer park, you tell me, flipside, are you going to let me in your sorority???? yes, some things aren't fair, i agree with that...but let's face it, personality can't win everything....all i was asking was one simple question about other DG's...but if you want to get techincal, then tell me why are some sororities themselves judgemental? could it be that they have a standard? OF COURSE they do, and why shouldn't they?? they are a privately funded group that can choose who they want in their society, so if they don't want large girls, small girls, rich girls, poor girls, white girls or black girls in their sorority, then that is their decision....i was just stating the rumor of the latest classes of DG...sorry if i offended anyone...i guess stepping on toes it what i do best

You know what RedandBlack - you are absolutely right. It's completely superficial, part of the system and we couldn't change that if we wanted to. I just sort of take issue with the fat/skinny house thing. As I said before, these stereotypes often get going based on very little and change the whole perception of a house that may contain some beautiful young women (both on the outside and inside.) Also, I feel that some of the top houses have been perceived to encourage unhealthy eating practices and warped body image. Rumors get started about those houses (untrue as far as I've seen) that they "circle the fat" on their pledges and demand that they loose it. I guess fat paranoia and dieting is just a natural part of being a 19 year old girl. I just don't want to be part of encouraging that.
Still, the rush process always has and always will revolve around poise, fashion sense, disposable income of your parents, and who you were in high school. Even people who claim to be "above" judgements like that aren't when it comes right down to it. If you don't like a house - call them Dorks, Geeks, Losers, Tramps, etc. I just don't like the "fat chick house" label.

RedandBlack 07-18-2000 01:18 AM

i understand your paranoia....it is hard being this age and seeing people in the media being called fat when they are having to suck in to fit in a size 2...yeah, it kills me...but there are so many other types of stereotypes are just a degrading as being a little overweight (i know a girl who took her sisters home with her for the weekend, and because she didn't live in a large house, they told every girl in the sorority how "homely" her house was..and it really hurt her)...and i was not calling
DG's fat....i just wanted to find out about other ones....sorry if i upset you

Delta Gamma is an excellent house nationally, right up there with Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta and Chi Omega.

I think beyond the rep you need to know what you would be looking at from a system perspective of joining a house that is so very size deficient as compared to other larger house. It is challenging and often frustrating being part of the smallest house --formal rush is really hard and you work just as hard as the other groups without the same results (rarely pledge quota). It is difficult to get homecoming and other popular events with the "top" fraternities. Often you must live in the house more years than other chapters because the bigger houses has more girls to fill spots.

Now the good side: often it is a more "real" house who selects you for you and not because you would be a good "face girl" for the house. There are a lot of leadership opportunities and given the right training you can be instrumental in turning your chapter in the upwards direction.

I don't want to sway you either way but when you are rushing sometimes you don't know the whole story of joining a small group. I did it and would never regret it for a minute.

Good luck!
